The R503 is a Regional Route in North West, South Africa that connects Mahikeng with Klerksdorp via Lichtenburg and Coligny. Route The R503 begins in the town of Mahikeng, the capital of the North West, at a four-way-junction with the N18 National Route and the R49 Route. It goes south-east for 62 kilometres, forming the southern border of the Mafikeng Game Reserve, bypassing Itsoseng, to the town of Lichtenburg, where it enters in an easterly direction and meets the R505 Route. The R505 joins the R503 and they are one road eastwards into the town centre as Swart Street, then southwards as Nelson Mandela Drive, to meet the R52 Route at the junction with Gerrit Maritz Street. Klerksdorp
Klerksdorp () is located in the North West Province, South Africa. Klerksdorp, the largest city in the North West Province, is located southeast of Mahikeng, the provincial capital. Klerksdorp was also the first capital of the then Transvaal Republic and used to be the home of the first Stock Exchange in the region. It became an important trading town linking Kimberley to Johannesburg. It became home to a mix of farmers, miners and immigrants servicing the two industries. History Beginnings (1837/38 and on) The city was founded in 1837 or 1838 when the Voortrekkers settled on the banks of the ''Schoonspruit'' ("Clear stream"), which flows through the town. The N12 is a national route in South Africa which runs from George through Beaufort West, Kimberley, Klerksdorp and Johannesburg to eMalahleni. It is the only other National Route after the N1 Route that connects the Western Cape Province with the Gauteng Province. Prior to 1971, the N12 from Johannesburg to Three Sisters was known as the N13. Route Summary The road starts in George in the Western Cape and ends in eMalahleni in Mpumalanga. The R507 is a Regional Route in South Africa. Route Its north-western end is in the village of Setlagole, North West where it originates from the N18. Heading south-east, it reaches Delareyville where it crosses the N14 at a staggered junction. From here, it takes a more east-west route to Ottosdal, where it intersects the R505. The N14 is a national route in South Africa which runs from Springbok in the Northern Cape to Pretoria in Gauteng. It passes through Upington, Kuruman, Vryburg, Krugersdorp and Centurion. The section between Pretoria and Krugersdorp is maintained by the Gauteng Provincial government and is also designated the P158, and is also a 4-lane dual carriageway with 2 lanes in each direction. It begins as Shippard Street, going eastwards to form the northern border of the Mafikeng Game Reserve. Hartbeesfontein
Hartbeesfontein, officially Lethabong, is a settlement near Klerksdorp, in the North West province of South Africa. It is situated at the intersection of the R503 and R507 routes. Geology The town is situated on an ancient geological feature known as the Hartbeesfontein basin (or KOSH basin), which is the source of the gold found on its southern rim. Underground water occurs in abundance in dolomitic aquifers of the region. When the water is however allowed to seep into mines it is oxidised and polluted by the exposed iron pyrites. As of 2005 when Buffelsfontein mine went out of business, it became a burden on the remaining mines to keep the interconnected tunnels free of water.
