It continues north to Alice, were it is co-signed with the R63 for a 9.6 km long section heading east. The R72 is a provincial route in Eastern Cape, South Africa that connects the N2 east of Port Elizabeth with East London via Port Alfred. It provides an alternative to the N2 for travel between Port Elizabeth and East London. Route The R72 begins in the city of East London in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, at an off-ramp junction with the N2 Highway. North of this junction, it is the N6 National Route to Bloemfontein. The R72 begins by going southwards for 6 kilometres from the N2 interchange as the North East Expressway, immediately crossing the Nahoon River and becoming a partial highway with off-ramp junctions, up to the Fleet Street junction in the suburb of Quigney, where it becomes Fleet Street westwards. Hogsback, Eastern Cape
Hogsback is a village in the Amathole Mountains in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Name There are two (or maybe more) theories as how the village received its name. Some think it was named for Captain Hogg, Commander of Fort Michell. Others think that it is because one of the three peaks that overlook the village, when seen from a certain angle, resembles a Hog's Back (A hog's back is a geological term describing this particular rock formation). History The earliest known written reference to 'Hogsback' was found in the journal of the painter Thomas Baines, who passed the 'Hogs Back' while on his travels deeper inside South Africa in 1848. Besides the 'Hogsback', the highest peak in the area is the 1 954 m Gaika's Kop. Fort Hare was an 1835 British-built fort on a rocky outcrop at the foothills of the Amatola Mountains; close to the present day town of Alice, Eastern Cape in South Africa. History Originally, Fort Hare was a British fort in the wars between the British troops and the Xhosa of the 19th century. A British fort, Fort Glamorgan, was built on the West Bank of East London in 1837, and annexed to the Cape Colony that same year. This fort is one of a series of forts the British built, that include Fort Murray, Fort White, Fort Cox, Fort Hare and Fort Willshire, in the border area that became known as British Kaffraria. Alice is a small town in Eastern Cape, South Africa that is named after Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, Princess Alice, the daughter of the British Queen Victoria.
