R. B. Gautier
Redmond Bunn 'R.B.' Gautier Sr. (1877-1944) was an attorney, judge and the City of Miami's 15th Mayor. Gautier was born in Putnam County, Florida. When he was a boy his family moved to Miami. His grandfather, Thomas Nicholas (T.N.) Gautier Sr, was signer on the city's filing for incorporation. The Gautiers are considered Miami pioneers. Around the time of WWI, the Gautier family lived in Miami Beach and Gautier listed his occupation as 'Attorney.' R.B. Gautier later became a county judge, and later successfully ran for Mayor of Miami. He was seated next to Franklin D. Roosevelt at Bayfront Park in Miami in February 1933 when Giuseppe Zangara attempted to assassinate Roosevelt. Gautier and Roosevelt survived unscathed but Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was mortally wounded and five other bystanders sustained injuries. Putnam County is a county located in the northern part of the state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 73,321. Its county seat is Palatka. Putnam County comprises the Palatka, FL Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Jacksonville- St. Marys-Palatka, FL- GA Combined Statistical Area. The county is centrally located between Jacksonville, Gainesville, St. Augustine, and Daytona Beach. History Putnam County was created in 1849. Anton Cermak
Anton Joseph Cermak ( cs, Antonín Josef Čermák, ; May 9, 1873 – March 6, 1933) was an American politician who served as the 44th mayor of Chicago, Illinois from April 7, 1931 until his death on March 6, 1933. He was killed by an assassin, whose likely target was President Franklin D. Roosevelt, but the assassin shot Cermak instead after a bystander hit the assassin with a purse. Life Cermak was born to a mining family in Kladno, Austria-Hungary (now in the Czech Republic), the son of Antonín Čermák and Kateřina née Frank(ová). He emigrated with his parents to the United States in 1874, and grew up in the town of Braidwood, Illinois, where he was educated before beginning to work full time while still a teenager. He followed his father into coal mining, and labored at mines in Will and Grundy counties. Thousands of years before Europeans arrived, a large portion of south east Florida, including the area where Miami, Florida exists today, was inhabited by Tequestas. The Tequesta (also Tekesta, Tegesta, Chequesta, Vizcaynos) Native American tribe, at the time of first European contact, occupied an area along the southeastern Atlantic coast of Florida. They had infrequent contact with Europeans and had largely migrated by the middle of the 18th century. Miami is named after the Mayaimi, a Native American tribe that lived around Lake Okeechobee until the 17th or 18th century. The Spanish established a mission and small garrison among the Tequesta on Biscayne Bay in 1567. The mission and garrison were withdrawn a couple of years later. In 1743 the governor of Cuba established another mission and garrison on Biscayne Bay. The government of the city of Miami, Florida is organized under the City Charter, which provides for a mayor-commissioner form of city government. Organization City Commission and Mayor The Mayor of Miami, currently Francis X. Suarez, is the city's executive and is directly elected; the mayor appoints a city manager to act as Miami's chief administrative officer. Five city commissioners are also elected from single-member districts of which they are residents. City commissioners also must be qualified voters.
