Quirke Mine
The Quirke Mine is an abandoned uranium mine located approximately 13.5 km north of Elliot Lake, Ontario, owned and operated by Rio Algom Ltd. The site has been rehabilitated and is currently undergoing environmental monitoring. The mine was in operation from 1956 to 1960, and again from 1968 to 1990, during which time it produced 44 million tons of ore from two separate shafts. Elliot Lake
Elliot Lake is a city in Algoma District, Ontario, Canada. It is north of Lake Huron, midway between the cities of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie in the Northern Ontario region. Once dubbed the "uranium capital of the world," Elliot Lake has since diversified to a hub for forest harvesting, mine reclamation expertise, and advanced manufacturing. Elliot Lake is now known as a place for affordable retirement living, waterfront cottage lots and as a four-season destination. History Prior to the settlement of the city, a seasonal Ojibwa village extended along the lake's shoreline near the present hospital. The town takes its name from the lake. Pronto Mine
The Pronto Mine is an historical uranium mine located approximately 20 km south of Elliot Lake, Ontario near Spragge. The site is owned and operated by Rio Algom Ltd, has been rehabilitated and is currently undergoing environmental monitoring. The mine was in operation from 1956 to 1960, during which time it produced 4,643,835 pounds of U3O8. Upon closure of the mine, the mill was converted to a copper concentrator to process ore from the nearby Pater Mine and operated until 1970. History The Pronto mine is located on lot 3, concession II, Long township. It is located 11 miles east of Blind River, it is near the Canadian Pacific Railway and highway 17. Uranium is a chemical element with the symbol U and atomic number 92. It is a silvery-grey metal in the actinide series of the periodic table. Uranium production is carried out in about 13 countries around the world, in 2017 producing a cumulative total of 59,462 tonnes of uranium (tU). The international producers were Kazakhstan (39%), Canada (22%), Australia (10%), Namibia (7.1%), Niger (5.8%), Russian Federation (4.9%), Uzbekistan (4.0%), China (3.2%), United States (1.6%), Ukraine (0.9%), India (0.7%), South Africa (0.5%) and Pakistan (0.1%). Uranium mining is the process of extraction of uranium ore from the ground. Over 50 thousand tons of uranium were produced in 2019. Kazakhstan, Canada, and Australia were the top three uranium producers, respectively, and together account for 68% of world production. Other countries producing more than 1,000 tons per year included Namibia, Niger, Russia, Uzbekistan, the United States, and China. Nearly all of the world's mined uranium is used to power nuclear power plants. Historically uranium was also used in applications such as uranium glass or ferrouranium but those applications have declined due to the radioactivity of uranium and are nowadays mostly supplied with a plentiful cheap supply of depleted uranium which is also used in uranium ammunition. Nordic Mine
The Nordic Mine, is an abandoned uranium mine in the Elliot Lake area of Ontario, owned by Rio Algom Ltd. The site has been rehabilitated and its tailings facility is currently undergoing environmental monitoring by Denison Environmental Services. The site was in operation from 1957 to 1968, during which time it produced 13 million tonnes of ore. The mill continued to process ore from the Quirke and Panel mines until 1990. Although underground production ceased in 1968, the Dry-and-Pack section of the mill was active for 2 more decades along with several offices and a Security Gatehouse. The property also became a temporary graveyard for derelict and neglected vehicles from various Rio Algoma apartment parking lots, mine parking lots and trailer park left-overs as people were coming and going during the crazy boom days of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Buckles Mine is an historical uranium mine located approximately 4.5 km southeast of Elliot Lake, Ontario, owned and operated by Rio Algom Ltd. The site has been rehabilitated. Environmental monitoring is ongoing as part of the monitoring for the nearby Nordic Mine. History The mine was owned by Buckles Algoma Uranium Mines Limited, and was bought in 1955 by Spanish American Mines Limited in 1955. 1955 reserves were indicated to be 486,500 tons at 0.124% U308 in a 10 feet thick zone located 75 feet underground. Stanrock Mine
The Stanrock Mine is an historical uranium mine located approximately 11.5 km northeast of Elliot Lake, Ontario, owned by Denison Mines. The site has been decommissioned and rehabilitated with ongoing monitoring by Denison Environmental Services. the site was in operation from 1958 to 1964 as a traditional mining operation. Following the end of large scale drilling and blasting operations, the mine continued production using a leaching technique which utilized water and bacteria. Production contracts were fulfilled by 1970 and all operations ceased.
