Vega Company
The Vega Company was a musical instrument manufacturer that started operations in Boston, Massachusetts in 1881. The company began under Swedish-born Julius Nelson, his brother Carl, and a group of associates that included John Pahn and John Swenson. The founders had previously worked for a guitar shop run by Pehr Anderberg that made instruments for John C. Haynes, another Boston musical instrument company. Nelson had served as foreman of guitar and mandolin manufacturing at Anderberg's shop. Subsequently, Julius and Carl Nelson bought out the other founding associates and established the Vega company. In 1904, Vega acquired the instrument manufacturing firm (primarily building banjos) previously operated by A. C. Fairbanks. Vega also acquired the plectrum instrument division of Boston's Thompson & Odell Company, which made bowl-back mandolins, guitars, and several types of banjos. William Quinby De Funiak (November 16, 1901 – November 2, 1981) was an American writer and law academic who wrote what was probably the first systematic American-British, British-American dictionary: ''American-British, British-American Dictionary With Helpful Hints for Travelers''. It was published in the 1960s. He was born in Alabama and traveled abroad to lecture and study and visited Britain a good deal. He noted the linguistic differences between American English and British English and decided to produce a detailed glossary to aid the "two peoples separated by a common language" (as George Bernard Shaw put it). As a regular traveler, De Funiak focused particularly on the needs of the business traveler such as transport, food, lodging and entertainment. The dictionary was last reprinted in 1978 and is still available, though the advice for travelers is now somewhat out of date. He is remembered as the father of practical beekeeping and the father of commercial beekeeping in America. He is best known as the inventor of the bee smoker with bellows. Ivory Quinby
Ivory Quinby (July 14, 1817 – October 23, 1869) was an American businessman who was notably one of the earliest benefactors of Monmouth College, and also helped establish Monmouth, Illinois as a transportation center. Early life Ivory Quinby I was born on July 14, 1817, in Buxton, Maine. He was named after his mother's former husband, Ivory Fenderson, who had died four years earlier. His parents were Asa and Mehitable (née Milliken) Quinby. He had a brother and sister, named Rodney and Elizabeth. He came from an old New England family, who settled the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1638. At fifteen, he was enrolled at Waterville College. After graduating on August 3, 1836 with honors, Quinby moved to Parsonsfield, Maine, to live with his uncle Hosea Quinby, where he was employed by Parsonsfield Seminary, a Free Will Baptist academy, as an assistant teacher.
