Quicksand (band)
Quicksand is an American post-hardcore band from New York City, founded in 1990. Their debut self-titled EP was followed by two major-label albums, '' Slip'' (1993) and '' Manic Compression'' (1995). Quicksand's sound has been compared to that of post-hardcore bands Fugazi and Helmet. The band supported their releases with extensive touring but fell short of the mainstream success anticipated by their labels. These factors and internal stress led them to separate first in 1995 and again in 1999 following a failed year-and-a-half reunion. In June 2012, Quicksand reunited for a special one-night performance and since has been playing additional live shows. Walter Schreifels
Walter Schreifels (born March 10, 1969) is an American rock musician and producer from New York City. Career In the late 1980s, he played in many New York hardcore bands, most notably Youth of Today and Gorilla Biscuits, where he was also the songwriter and lyricist. After Gorilla Biscuits broke up, he formed the short-lived Moondog. In October 2006, the band's self-titled EP was officially released for the first time ever on Anthology Recordings. It was previously available only as a bootleg 7" record. Moondog would transition into the more metal-oriented post-hardcore band Quicksand. He also collaborated with his former Gorilla Biscuits bandmates in the melodic hardcore band CIV, writing much of their first LP and one song on their follow-up LP despite not actually playing on the record. A burn is an injury to skin, or other tissues, caused by heat, cold, electricity, chemicals, friction, or ultraviolet radiation (like sunburn). Most burns are due to heat from hot liquids (called scalding), solids, or fire. Burns occur mainly in the home or the workplace. Bold (originally named Crippled Youth) is an American late 1980s youth crew hardcore band from Westchester County, New York, which, along with bands like Youth of Today and Side by Side, were a part of the Youth Crew and an influence in the late 80s straight edge hardcore scene. The band progressed to a more rock-oriented sound in its later years. History 1986–1993: Original run Originally called Crippled Youth, the band was formed in Katonah, New York, by Matt Warnke (vocals), Tim Brooks (bass) and Drew Thomas (drums). Youth Of Today
Youth of Today is an American hardcore punk band, initially active from 1985 to 1990 before reforming in 2010. The band played a major role in establishing the "Youth Crew" subculture of hardcore, both espousing and evolving the philosophies of the straight edge and vegetarian lifestyles. After the band's dissolution, vocalist Ray Cappo became involved in the Hare Krishna movement and formed the bands Shelter and Better Than a Thousand. Youth of Today is currently composed of Cappo and guitarist John Porcelly, both founding members, as well as bassist Walter Schreifels and drummer Sammy Siegler. New York Hardcore
New York hardcore (also known as NYHC) is both the hardcore punk music created in New York City and the subculture and lifestyle associated with that music. New York hardcore grew out of the hardcore scene established in Washington, D.C., by bands such as Bad Brains and Minor Threat. Initially a local phenomenon of the 1980s and 1990s, New York hardcore eventually grew to establish an international reputation with little to moderate mainstream popularity but with a dedicated and enthusiastic underground following, primarily in Europe and the United States. ''Distant Populations'' is the fourth studio album by American post-hardcore band Quicksand. The album was released digitally on August 13, 2021 through Epitaph Records. Background The band's previous studio album, ''Interiors'', was released on November 10, 2017 and was the band's first release since 1995's ''Manic Compression''. In 2018, Quicksand released an EP titled ''Triptych Continuum'' on 12-inch vinyl for Record Store Day. On April 13, 2021, the band released the single "Inversion", but did not announce a new album at the time. ''Interiors'' is the third album by American post-hardcore band Quicksand, released on November 10, 2017. It is the band's first studio album since ''Manic Compression'' (1995), and their first release on Epitaph Records. History Quicksand first disbanded in October 1995, about eight months after the release of ''Manic Compression'', because of internal conflicts. However, the band reunited in 1997, and spent most of the following year writing new material and embarking on their first tour in three years. Helmet (band)
Helmet is an American alternative metal band from New York City formed in 1989 by vocalist and lead guitarist Page Hamilton. Helmet has had numerous lineup changes with Hamilton as the only constant member. Since 2010, the band has consisted of Hamilton, drummer Kyle Stevenson, guitarist Dan Beeman and bassist Dave Case. Helmet has released eight studio albums and two compilation albums. After releasing their debut album, '' Strap It On'' (1990), on Amphetamine Reptile, Helmet signed to Interscope Records and released three albums for the label, including the highly successful '' Meantime'' (1992). The band consists of guitarists and vocalists Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto, bassist Joe Lally, and drummer Brendan Canty. ''Manic Compression'' is the second studio album by American post-hardcore band Quicksand. It was released in 1995 on Island Records. The album influenced many post-hardcore and alternative metal bands. It peaked at number 135 on the ''Billboard'' 200. It was Quicksand's last studio album before their initial breakup, leading to a 22-year gap in output until the release of ''Interiors'', in 2017. In the meantime, a follow-up album was conceptualized during their brief 1997–1999 reunion, but it never materialized. A vinyl version of the album was released in early 2013 by Shop Radio Cast. It incorrectly lists "Landmine Spring" as the first song on the B-side on the cover, when the song is the last song pressed on the A-side. Slip (album)
''Slip'' is the debut studio album by American post-hardcore band Quicksand, released February 9, 1993 on the Polydor label. "Omission" and "Unfulfilled" first appeared on their 1990 self-titled EP. ''Slip'' was well received by music critics and is now considered a classic in the post-hardcore and alternative metal genres, influencing many acts including Torche and Deftones. The lead single off the album, "Fazer", became a college radio hit. The album was reissued on vinyl in 2012, through Dine Alone Records and Shop Radio Cast. The reissue featured a cover of The Smiths song "How Soon Is Now?". Critical reception The album generally received positive reviews from music critics.
