A wharf, quay (, also ), staith, or staithe is a structure on the shore of a harbour or on the bank of a river or canal where ships may dock to load and unload cargo or passengers. Such a structure includes one or more berths (mooring locations), and may also include piers, warehouses, or other facilities necessary for handling the ships. Wharves are often considered to be a series of docks at which boats are stationed. Overview A wharf commonly comprises a fixed platform, often on pilings. Quay (restaurant)
Quay is a restaurant in Sydney, Australia. It is owned by Leon Fink, and is run by chef Peter Gilmore. It has won several awards in Australia, and has appeared in The World's 50 Best Restaurants several times. Description Quay is located in the Overseas Passenger Terminal, Sydney Harbour, with views towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The restaurant is owned by Leon Fink. Chef Peter Gilmore joined the restaurant in 2001. It reopened after a major overhaul in July 2018. Menu Quay serves contemporary Australian cuisine. The restaurant has several signature dishes, including the "Snow Egg", an egg-shaped poached meringue with an ice cream centre, which is coated in a sweet tuile by using a blow torch. ''Quay'' is a 2015 British short documentary film composed, shot, edited, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan about animators Stephen and Timothy Quay. The film premiered at the Film Forum theatre in New York City on 19 August 2015. Jan Eduard de Quay (26 August 1901 – 4 July 1985) was a Dutch politician of the defunct Catholic People's Party (KVP) now the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party and psychologist who served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 19 May 1959 until 24 July 1963. Matthew Quay
Matthew Stanley "Matt" Quay (September 30, 1833May 28, 1904) was an American politician of the Republican Party who represented Pennsylvania in the United States Senate from 1887 until 1899 and from 1901 until his death in 1904. Quay's control of the Pennsylvania Republican political machine made him one of the most powerful and influential politicians in the country, and he ruled Pennsylvania politics for almost twenty years. As chair of the Republican National Committee and thus party campaign manager, he helped elect Benjamin Harrison as president in 1888 despite his not winning the popular vote. He was also instrumental in the 1900 election of Theodore Roosevelt as vice president. Quay studied law and began his career in public office by becoming prothonotary of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, in 1856. Brothers Quay
Stephen and Timothy Quay ( ; born June 17, 1947) are American identical twin brothers and stop-motion animators who are better known as the Brothers Quay or Quay Brothers. They were also the recipients of the 1998 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Set Design for their work on the play ''The Chairs''. Careers The Quay Brothers reside and work in England, having moved there in 1969 to study at the Royal College of Art, London after studying illustration (Timothy) and film (Stephen) at the Philadelphia College of Art, now the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In England they made their first short films, which no longer exist after the only prints were irreparably damaged. They spent some time in the Netherlands in the 1970s and then returned to England, where they teamed up with another Royal College student, Keith Griffiths, who produced all of their films. Quay is an unincorporated community in Quay County, New Mexico, United States It is located approximately south of Tucumcari on New Mexico State Road 209. History Settlement of the community of Quay began ''circa'' 1902. In 1904, the community received its official name following the establishment of its post office. The name "Quay" honors Matthew S. Quay, a Civil War veteran who became a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania in 1887. While in office, Quay became a proponent of statehood for the Territory of New Mexico and was appreciated throughout the state for his efforts. New Mexico was admitted as the 47th state in the Union on January 6, 1912. Sometime before 1926, the settlement was moved to the northwest to its present location near the newly constructed New Mexico State Highway 209, which stretches through the broad valley known as Quay Valley. Quay is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located on the boundary line between Pawnee and Payne counties in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 47 at the 2000 census, when it was still a town; the community disincorporated on August 23, 2000. No population was recorded in the census of 2010. But the 2020 Census recorded 39 persons. History This community was originally named Lawson, for the townsite owner, Stonewall J. Lawson. A post office was established here January 17, 1894. The post office was renamed Quay in honor of Pennsylvania Senator Matthew Quay on February 24, 1903. Initially, Quay was an agricultural center. The discovery of oil nearby caused the population to mushroom from about one hundred to about four thousand during the early 1920s.
