Quail Island (Northern Territory)
Quail Island is an island in the Northern Territory of Australia in the Beagle Gulf about from the territory capital of Darwin. Quail Island belongs to the Quail Island Group. The other two islands in the archipelago are Bare Sand Island (southwest of Quail Island) and Djadjalbit Island (south). The islands are known for being a breeding ground for flatback turtles. History On 9 October 1881 when ''SS Brisbane'', an 85.8 metres long passenger, cargo and mail ship, built by A & J Inglis, Pointhouse, Glasgow, struck the nearby ''Fish Reef'', while heading there with cargo from Hong Kong. Quail Island Air Weapons Range The Quail Island Air Weapons Range was used a training ground for defense forces from 1945 to 1979. There are large munitions scattered around the island as a result. LANDSAT
The Landsat program is the longest-running enterprise for acquisition of satellite imagery of Earth. It is a joint NASA / USGS program. On 23 July 1972, the Earth Resources Technology Satellite was launched. This was eventually renamed to Landsat 1 in 1975. The most recent, Landsat 9, was launched on 27 September 2021. The instruments on the Landsat satellites have acquired millions of images. The images, archived in the United States and at Landsat receiving stations around the world, are a unique resource for global change research and applications in agriculture, cartography, geology, forestry, regional planning, surveillance and education, and can be viewed through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) "EarthExplorer" website. Beagle Gulf
Beagle Gulf is a gulf in the Northern Territory of Australia which opens on its west side to the Timor Sea. The gulf is bounded to the south by the mainland and to the north by Bathurst and Melville Islands. It is connected to Van Diemen Gulf in the east by Clarence Strait. Its south coast includes the natural harbours of Darwin and Bynoe. It is approximately 100 km long and 50 km wide. It surrounds the Quail Island Group. Bynoe Harbour, Northern Territory
__NOTOC__ Bynoe Harbour is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about south-west of the territory capital of Darwin. Bynoe Harbour consists of the full extent of the natural harbour of Bynoe Harbour which extends in an easterly direction into the mainland forming one of the sides of the Cox Peninsula and which is enclosed to the west by a spit consisting of a number of islands including Quail Island at the spit's northern end. The mouth of the natural harbour opens to the north into Beagle Gulf. Flatback Turtle
The Australian flatback sea turtle (''Natator depressus'') is a species of sea turtle in the family Cheloniidae. The species is endemic to the sandy beaches and shallow coastal waters of the Australian continental shelf. This turtle gets its common name from the fact that its shell has a flattened or lower dome than the other sea turtles. It can be olive green to grey with a cream underside. It averages from 76 to 96 cm (30 to 38 inches) in carapace length and can weigh from 70 to 90 kg (154 to 198 lb). The hatchlings, when emerging from nests, are larger than other sea turtle hatchlings when they hatch. The flatback turtle is listed by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as data deficient, meaning there is insufficient scientific information to determine its conservation status at this time. SS ''Brisbane'' was an 85.8 metres long passenger, cargo and mail ship, built by A & J Inglis, Pointhouse, Glasgow, launched in 1874. It was owned by the Eastern & Australian Mail Steamship Co Ltd. A & J Inglis
A & J Inglis, Ltd, was a shipbuilding firm founded by Anthony Inglis and his brother John, engineers and shipbuilders in Glasgow, Scotland in 1862. The firm built over 500 ships in a period of just over 100 years. Their Pointhouse Shipyard was at the confluence of the rivers Clyde and Kelvin. They constructed a wide range of ships, including Clyde steamers, paddle steamers and small ocean liners. In wartime, they built small warships, and in the period after World War II, they built a number of whalers. History A & J Inglis of Glasgow was formed in 1848 as an engineering works. Thomas B.
