Bynoe Harbour, Northern Territory
__NOTOC__ Bynoe Harbour is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about south-west of the territory capital of Darwin. Bynoe Harbour consists of the full extent of the natural harbour of Bynoe Harbour which extends in an easterly direction into the mainland forming one of the sides of the Cox Peninsula and which is enclosed to the west by a spit consisting of a number of islands including Quail Island at the spit's northern end. The mouth of the natural harbour opens to the north into Beagle Gulf. The locality is bounded to the north by a line running across the harbour's mouth from Birge Point on the Cox Peninsula in the east via the northern tip of Indian Island to Quail Island in the west and bounded in the west by a line from Quail Island in the north to Point Paterson in the locality of Dundee Beach in the south. Quail Island (Northern Territory)
Quail Island is an island in the Northern Territory of Australia in the Beagle Gulf about from the territory capital of Darwin. Quail Island belongs to the Quail Island Group. The other two islands in the archipelago are Bare Sand Island (southwest of Quail Island) and Djadjalbit Island (south). The islands are known for being a breeding ground for flatback turtles. History On 9 October 1881 when ''SS Brisbane'', an 85.8 metres long passenger, cargo and mail ship, built by A & J Inglis, Pointhouse, Glasgow, struck the nearby ''Fish Reef'', while heading there with cargo from Hong Kong. Division Of Lingiari
The Division of Lingiari is an Australian electoral division in the Northern Territory that covers the entirety of the territory outside of the Division of Solomon, which covers Darwin and surrounding areas. The division also includes the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Lingiari includes all of the Northern Territory's remote Indigenous communities, most of whom vote when visited by mobile polling teams during the election campaign. The current MP is Marion Scrymgour, a member of the Australian Labor Party. Scrymgour herself is Indigenous and inherited Tiwi identity from her mother. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. HMS Beagle
HMS ''Beagle'' was a 10-gun brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, one of more than 100 ships of this class. The vessel, constructed at a cost of £7,803 (roughly equivalent to £ in 2018), was launched on 11 May 1820 from the Woolwich Dockyard on the River Thames. Later reports say the ship took part in celebrations of the coronation of King George IV of the United Kingdom, passing through the old London Bridge, and was the first rigged man-of-war afloat upriver of the bridge. There was no immediate need for ''Beagle'' so she " lay in ordinary", moored afloat but without masts or rigging. She was then adapted as a survey barque and took part in three survey expeditions. Benjamin Bynoe
Benjamin Bynoe (1803–1865) was surgeon on the voyages of HMS Beagle, HMS ''Beagle'' who made collections of plants and animals at the western and northern coasts of Australia. Born in Barbados in 1803, Benjamin Bynoe was accepted by the Royal College of Surgeons and Royal Navy in 1825. Bynoe sailed with Charles Darwin on the Second voyage of HMS Beagle, second voyage of the Beagle, nursing the young scientist back to health while ill in Chile. The surgeon accompanied Darwin during expeditions, and what would be the critical research at the Galápagos Islands, making field notes that were later consulted in Darwin's research for ''On the Origin of Species''. Beagle Gulf
Beagle Gulf is a gulf in the Northern Territory of Australia which opens on its west side to the Timor Sea. The gulf is bounded to the south by the mainland and to the north by Bathurst and Melville Islands. It is connected to Van Diemen Gulf in the east by Clarence Strait. Its south coast includes the natural harbours of Darwin and Bynoe. It is approximately 100 km long and 50 km wide. It surrounds the Quail Island Group. Cox Peninsula
__NOTOC__ The Wagait Shire is a local government area in the Northern Territory of Australia. The council was established as the Cox Peninsula Community Government Council on 28 April 1995 and renamed with effect from 1 July 2008. The shire is located west of Darwin, as a 15-minute ferry ride, or a drive on fully sealed roads. The council derived its previous name from the Cox Peninsula. It was named after Matthew Dillon Cox who was regarded as the Northern Territory's first pastoralist, who applied for a lease over the peninsula in 1869, just after the establishment of Darwin.
