Qkumba Zoo
Qkumba Zoo is a South African dance music duo from Johannesburg, South Africa, consisting of vocalist Levannah and musician/producer Owl. The band was originally formed by Owl and Levannah as a duo called Ocean Road. In 1996 the band was a trio and consisted of Owl, Levannah, and dancer/sculptor Tziki. The band's 1996 song " The Child (Inside)" was a hit in the United States, reaching number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. ''BIG'' Qkumba Zoo's first release was in 1995 titled ''BIG'', and it was released in South Africa on Gresham Records. At the time, the band's name was spelled 'Qcumba Zoo', and even Tziki's name was the elongated 'Tsatsiki'. The booklet contained a colourful, busy design, featuring original artwork from Tziki, and pictures from Qcumba's stage shows. "The Child (Inside)" is a song by South African trio Qkumba Zoo, released in August 1995 as their first single from the international debut album, ''Wake Up and Dream'' (1996). The song shot straight to the top of the charts in South Africa, earning them the Best New Band award at the 1996 South African Music Awards. Same year, it was a hit in the US, reaching number 69 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 as well as peaking at number-one on the ''Billboard'' Hot Dance Club Songs chart. The trio was the first South African group to top the Hot 100 in over 17 years. The track also peaked at number 34 on the ''Radio & Records'' contemporary hit radio chart on October 18, 1996. Murk (band)
Murk (also known by several other names, including Funky Green Dogs) is a house-music production team composed of Ralph Falcón and Oscar Gaetan. It formed in Miami in 1991. The group had seven consecutive singles that topped Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. Career Murk is one of the most influential music label in house music history. It has a vast back catalog of compositions dating from the early 1990s, including "Some Lovin'", "Reach For Me", "Been a long time" and "Every Now and Then," and many newer tracks such as "Fired up!" The University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) was a public university located in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Whigfield is an Italian dance act fronted by Danish singer, songwriter and record producer Sannie Charlotte Carlson (born 11 April 1970), known by her various stage names including Whigfield, Naan, or simply Sannie. She is best known for her 1993 single " Saturday Night", which became an international hit the following year. Bright Blue
Bright Blue was a South African band that was prominent on the progressive scene in the final years of apartheid. The band's name "reflected the paradox of being bright in a very blue time" but was also a tribute to Chelsea FC. They are best known for the protest song " Weeping", written by keyboard-player Dan Heymann, that the band recorded incorporating strands of "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" at a time when public performance of the ANC anthem could lead to summary arrest. However, the powers that be seemed to notice neither the reference to a banned tune nor that the song was an allegory about then State President PW Botha and the state of emergency that he had imposed. In 1999, "Weeping" was voted the "All-time favourite South African song" in a poll by SA Rock Digest/Amuzine.
