Qiu Xia He
He Qiuxia () is a Chinese ''pipa'' player. He Qiuxia was born in Baoji, Shaanxi, China and she studied at the Xi'an Academy of Music. After graduating, she taught at the academy and toured with the Shaanxi Music and Dance Troupe. In 1989, she went to Canada, and settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. He Qiuxia was a founding member of the cross-cultural ensemble ASZA, which she left in 2001. As well, she founded the Vancouver-based world music group, Silk Road Music. Her first recording with that group, entitled ''Endless'', was nominated for a Juno Award. Her CD ''Autumn Cloud'' was nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards. The group has performed on CBC Radio 2. He Qiuxia is married to the Montreal-born guitarist Andre Thibaul Now living in Vancouver, Thibault founded the group Jou Tou, in which He Qiuxia plays pipa and other instruments. Guqin
The ''guqin'' (; ) is a plucked seven-string Chinese musical instrument. It has been played since ancient times, and has traditionally been favoured by scholars and literati as an instrument of great subtlety and refinement, as highlighted by the quote "a gentleman does not part with his ''qin'' or '' se'' without good reason," as well as being associated with the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius. Pipa
The pipa, pípá, or p'i-p'a () is a traditional Chinese musical instrument, belonging to the plucked category of instruments. Sometimes called the "Chinese lute", the instrument has a pear-shaped wooden body with a varying number of frets ranging from 12 to 31. Another Chinese four-string plucked lute is the liuqin, which looks like a smaller version of the pipa. The pear-shaped instrument may have existed in China as early as the Han dynasty, and although historically the term ''pipa'' was once used to refer to a variety of plucked chordophones, its usage since the Song dynasty refers exclusively to the pear-shaped instrument. The ''ruan'' () is a traditional Chinese plucked string instrument. It is a lute with a fretted neck, a circular body, and four strings. Its four strings were formerly made of silk but since the 20th century they have been made of steel (flatwound for the lower strings). The modern ''ruan'' has 24 frets with 12 semitones on each string, which has greatly expanded its range from a previous 13 frets. The frets are commonly made of ivory or in recent times of metal mounted on wood. The metal frets produce a brighter tone as compared to the ivory frets. Celso Machado (born January 27, 1953) is a Brazilian world music guitarist, percussionist and multi-instrumentalist who lives in Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada. For over forty years he has performed on concert stages throughout Brazil, Western Europe and Canada, as well as in the United States. He is active as a teacher, composer and recording artist.
