QPSR
The Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway is located near Ipswich, Queensland, Australia and runs through the former West Moreton pioneering coal fields. It was first opened in 1881 by colliery proprietor and politician Lewis Thomas (1832-1913) as a tramway to his coal mines. The right-of way was later taken over by Queensland Railways, extended to take in over 20 mines before reaching to its present termini at Swanbank Loop where it served the Swanbank Power Stations. The branch remains the oldest continuously operating branchline in Queensland. Since 1978, Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway has operated passenger trains on this branch line using heritage rollingstock. Queensland C17 Class Locomotive
The Queensland Railways C17 class locomotive was a class of 4-8-0 steam locomotives operated by the Queensland Railways. History The C17 class was introduced as an improved version of the C16 class. Per Queensland Railway's classification system they were designated the C17 class, C representing they had four driving axles, and 17 representing the cylinder diameter in inches. The design was so successful that 227 locomotives were built from 1920 when the first engine Nº 15 entering service through until 1953 when Nº 1000 was delivered. The Commonwealth Railways NM class were of the same design. Ipswich Racecourse
The Ipswich Racecourse is an area of Ipswich in Suffolk, England, that was formerly a racecourse from 1710 to 1911. The racecourse 1710–1911 The course was on what was part of the then Nacton Heath which at the time was just east of Ipswich, now in Priory Heath Ward, Ipswich. It was 1 mile and 7 furlongs in circumference and ran along the line of the modern Lindberg Road, Cobham Road, parallel to Felixstowe Road as far the modern Hatfield Road before a six furlong finish straight running parallel to Nacton Road to complete the loop. The earliest mention of annual race meetings in Ipswich was 1710 when a Town Purse was run for by "high mettled racers". Walkers Limited
Walkers Limited was an Australian engineering company, based in Maryborough, Queensland. It built ships and railway locomotives. The Walkers factory still produces railway locomotives and rolling stock as part of Downer Rail. History In 1863 John Walker and three friends set up the ''Union Foundry'' of John Walker & Co in Ballarat. In 1867 a branch was opened in Maryborough. The Ballarat assets were disposed of in 1879 and in 1884, the business became a limited company under the title ''John Walker & Co Limited'', being renamed ''Walkers Limited'' in 1888. The company produced most of the parts for machinery at sugar mills. In 1980 Walkers Limited was sold to Evans Deakin Industries. New South Wales 40 Class Locomotive
The 40 class were a class of diesel locomotives built by Montreal Locomotive Works, Canada for the New South Wales Department of Railways in 1951/52. History The 40 class were the first mainline diesel electric locomotives to be built for the New South Wales Department of Railways. Built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1951/52, they were based on the ALCO RSC-3 design. There were subtle deviations from the standard RSC-3 built by the American Locomotive Company. These included cab sides that angled inwards from just below the cab window-sill level upwards to reduce the width of the locomotive at the eaves of the cab roof, and placement of the handrails on the car body rather than the standard walkway arrangement. Zig Zag Railway
The Zig Zag Railway is an Australian heritage railway, situated near Lithgow, New South Wales. It was opened by the not-for-profit Zig Zag Railway Co-op as an unpaid volunteer-staffed heritage railway in October 1975, using the alignment of the Lithgow Zig Zag line that formed part of the Main Western line between 1869 and 1910. The line climbs the western flank of the Blue Mountains, using railway zig zags to gain height. Operation of the heritage railway was suspended in 2012 following accreditation issues with the Government of New South Wales. The railway was aiming to resume services in October 2013, but was then severely damaged during the 2013 NSW Bushfires and then subsequently by torrential rain. Queensland Railways 1600 Class
The 1600 class was a class of diesel locomotives built by English Electric, Rocklea for Queensland Railways between 1962 and 1964. History The 1600 class were built as branch line locomotives. Two contracts were let of which the first was for twelve with a follow on contract for another six. The first batch were delivered between December 1962 and June 1963, with the others arriving between October 1963 and January 1964.
