Quonochontaug, Rhode Island
Quonochontaug is a village in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. It is composed of three small beach communities, and is part of Charlestown. Geography Quonochontaug is located between the Ninigret Pond and Quonochontaug Pond and their respective barrier beaches, both of which are salt ponds. The communities of West Beach, Central Beach, and East Beach house several hundred residents, mostly in the summers, and many houses are available as summer rentals. Blue Shutters Beach is town-owned and is located at the end of East Beach Road in Quonochontaug. To the east of Blue Shutters, an unpaved road leads to the entrance of the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. The area was listed as a census-designated place in the 2010 census. Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge
The Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge situated along the shore of Ninigret Pond. It is characterized by salt marshes, kettle ponds, freshwater wetlands, maritime shrub lands, and forests, and it is seasonally inhabited by over 250 species of birds. The area was originally used for farming, prior to being utilized in World War II as a Naval Auxiliary landing field. It was designated as a refuge in 1970 upon the transfer of of land to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Subsequent transfers and purchases increased the protected area to approximately . During the winter months, black ducks, Canada geese, and diving ducks are especially prominent on the pond, while various species of migrating raptors are also common. The Providence metropolitan area is a region extending into eight counties in two states, and is the 38th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Babcock House (Charlestown, Rhode Island)
The Babcock House is a historic house also known as Whistling Chimneys, located on Main Street in the Quonochontaug section of Charlestown, Rhode Island. History The oldest portion of this -story wood-frame house is estimated to have been built sometime in the first two decades of the 18th century. It is similar to the Sheffield House, whose construction dates to 1685–1713. This house is believed to have been built by a member of the Stanton family, who also built the Sheffield House, possibly as a trading post. The house has an asymmetrical facade, the result of numerous alterations, but the original main block of the house has a massive central chimney, with two rooms on the right and one large chamber on the left. Additions in the 20th century have added rooms to the rear of the house, retaining the fabric of the main portion, and raising the roof to a full two stories. Quonochontaug Pond
Quonochontaug is a coastal lagoon in the towns of Charlestown and Westerly, both in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. It is the most saline of nine such lagoons (often referred to as "salt ponds") in southern Rhode Island. Geography Quonochontaug Pond is the deepest and most saline of the salt ponds. It is connected directly to the sea by a breachway that was stabilized with rock jetties by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s. And, as in the other ponds, sand eroding from the ocean side of the barrier beach is transported through the breachway into the pond where it settles and creates expanding shoals. In contrast to the other ponds, however, much of "Quonnie's" western barrier beach remains in a protected, undeveloped state even though it is privately owned.
