Quobba Station, most commonly referred to as Quobba, is a pastoral lease that operates as a sheep station in Western Australia. It was originally owned by Charles Augustus Fane and Charles Eugene Fane, who named it Point Charles. Description The property is situated approximately north of Carnarvon and south of Coral Bay at the southern tip of the Ningaloo Reef Marine Park in the Gascoyne region. It is bounded by Boolathana Station and Lake Macleod to the east and the south, Gnaraloo to the north, and the Indian Ocean to the west. The property is the most westerly station in Australia. The station has a boundary that runs north to south along the coast for a length of and has a width of between . Sinking Of HMAS Sydney
On 19 November 1941, the Australian light cruiser and the German auxiliary cruiser engaged each other in a battle off the coast of Western Australia. ''Sydney'', with Captain Joseph Burnett commanding, and ''Kormoran'', under Theodor Detmers, encountered each other approximately off Dirk Hartog Island. The single-ship action lasted half an hour, and both ships were destroyed. From 24 November, after ''Sydney'' failed to return to port, air and sea searches were conducted. Boats and rafts carrying survivors from ''Kormoran'' were recovered at sea, while others made landfall at Quobba Station, 60km (37mi) north of Carnarvon. 318 of the 399 personnel on ''Kormoran'' survived. While debris from ''Sydney'' was found, there were no survivors from the 645-strong complement. Boolathana Station is a pastoral lease currently operating as a cattle station that once operated as a sheep station in Western Australia. Description The property is situated approximately north of Carnarvon and south of Coral Bay in the Gascoyne region. The property is bounded by Quobba station to the west and the north. The homestead is situated on the banks of a large dam about long and wide. The country is mostly of a coastal nature with alternating sand ridges and salt bush flats. Several different native grasses, shrubs and the wattle variety ''Wanu'' provide good feed for stock. MV Korean Star (1984)
The MV ''Korean Star'' was a bulk carrier, built in 1984, that was wrecked on 20 May 1988 near Cape Cuvier, Western Australia. Fate The ''Korean Star'' sailed from Hong Kong on 11 May 1988 in ballast with 19 crew aboard, en route to load salt from Lake MacLeod. While anchored off Cape Cuvier, she dragged her anchors as a result of cyclonic weather conditions associated with Cyclone Herbie Tropical Cyclone Herbie was the only known tropical system to impact Western Australia during the month of May on record. Gnaraloo is a working pastoral station and wilderness tourism business located in the Gnaraloo Bay in the Shire of Carnarvon, Western Australia. The German auxiliary cruiser ''Kormoran'' (HSK-8). was a ''Kriegsmarine'' (German navy) merchant raider of World War II. Originally the merchant vessel ''Steiermark'' ("Styria"), the ship was acquired by the navy following the outbreak of war for conversion into a raider. Blowhole (geology)
In geology, a blowhole or marine geyser is formed as sea caves grow landwards and upwards into vertical shafts and expose themselves towards the surface, which can result in hydraulic compression of sea water that is released through a port from the top of the blowhole. The geometry of the cave and blowhole along with tide levels and swell conditions determine the height of the spray. Mechanics Blowholes are likely to occur in areas where there are crevices, such as lava tubes, in rock along the coast. These areas are often located along fault lines and on islands. As powerful waves hit the coast, water rushes into these crevices and bursts out in a high pressured release. It is often accompanied by a loud noise and wide spray, and for this reason, blowholes are often sites of tourism. Ningaloo Reef
The Ningaloo Coast is a World Heritage Site located in the north west coastal region of Western Australia. The heritage-listed area is located approximately north of Perth, along the East Indian Ocean. The distinctive Ningaloo Reef that fringes the Ningaloo Coast is long and is Australia's largest fringing coral reef and the only large reef positioned very close to a landmass. The Muiron Islands and Cape Farquhar are within this coastal zone.
