The Quitman County School District is a public school district based in Marks, Mississippi (USA). The district's boundaries are the same as Quitman County. The District's only high school ranks 189th out of 237 High Schools in Mississippi. Some time prior to 1999 the school converted a former restroom facility into a library because it was unable to get sufficient state funding to built a wholly new library. Circa 1999 the school could not find a librarian willing to move to Marks to staff the library, reflecting the general dearth of teachers in the Mississippi Delta. William Colbert Keady (April 2, 1913 â June 16, 1989) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi. He is best-known for his role in the landmark court case, ''Gates v. Collier''. Early life William Colbert Keady was born on April 2, 1913 in Greensville, Mississippi. His parents were Mary Augusta and Michael John Keady. William was the youngest of five children and born with a severe physical handicap; his right arm was extremely deformed with no right forearm and hand. However, Keady learned to adapt, often playing tennis with his friend, William Alexander Percy, and collecting stamps in his free time. Percy was a planter, poet, and attorney. He attended Greenville High School. His mother died on his sixteenth birthday, and his father died roughly two years later. Marks, Mississippi
Marks is a city in and the county seat of Quitman County, Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 1,735. History The town of Marks was named after Leopold Marks (1851-1910) who left Germany to avoid conscription by the German army. He arrived in New York in 1868. Marks, a Jew, became Quitman County's first representative to the state legislature and served for eight years. He encouraged the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad to come to the area by giving the railroad company, without cost, the right-of-way through his plantation plus of land. Leopold Marks' son Henry donated land to the town to be used as a cemetery. The official "founding" of the town is considered to be May 12, 1907; on May 12, 2007, the town celebrated its centennial. On September 26, 1913 a black man named Walter Brownloe, accused of attacking a white farmer's wife, was taken from the town prison by a mob and hanged. ''The Clarion Ledger'' is an American daily newspaper in Jackson, Mississippi. It is the second-oldest company in the state of Mississippi, and is one of the few newspapers in the nation that continues to circulate statewide. It is an operating division of Gannett River States Publishing Corporation, owned by Gannett. History The paper traces its roots to ''The Eastern Clarion,'' founded in Jasper County, Mississippi, in 1837. Later that year, it was sold and moved to Meridian, Mississippi. After the American Civil War, it was moved to Jackson, the capital, and merged with ''The Standard''. It soon became known as ''The Clarion''.
