Quintessence (French Band)
Quintessence is a French black metal band founded in 2005 in Poitiers, France. History Quintessence was founded in 2005 by guitarist Xavier, soon joined by Kriss, Antoine, Démence and Ludo. The band's music has significantly evolved with time; their first release reminds of the Scandinavian black metal scene with ubiquitous keyboards, which will later disappear thus giving way to heavy metal-influenced guitar solos and more elaborated song structures. Apart from their early demo, all the lyrics are sung in French. A demo called ''Black Hordes Unleashed'' was released in August 2007 under the name Occulta, right before the band changed name for Quintessence and hired a new drummer. This demo, self-released and limited to 200 copies only, consists in 4 tracks reminding many bands from the 1990s, mainly because of the importance of the keyboards and guitar melodies. V.R. then joined the band as a drummer in the end of 2007 in order to prepare the recording of their first full-len ...

Quintessence (physics)
In physics, quintessence is a hypothetical form of dark energy, more precisely a scalar field, postulated as an explanation of the observation of an accelerating rate of expansion of the universe. The first example of this scenario was proposed by Ratra and Peebles (1988) and Wetterich (1988). The concept was expanded to more general types of time-varying dark energy, and the term "quintessence" was first introduced in a 1998 paper by Robert R. Caldwell, Rahul Dave and Paul Steinhardt. It has been proposed by some physicists to be a fifth fundamental force. Quintessence differs from the cosmological constant explanation of dark energy in that it is dynamic; that is, it changes over time, unlike the cosmological constant which, by definition, does not change. Quintessence can be either attractive or repulsive depending on the ratio of its kinetic and potential energy. Those working with this postulate believe that quintessence became repulsive about ten billion years ago, ab ...

Quintessence Records
Quintessence Records started in 1976. Quintessence was formed by Pickwick International Inc. as a budget label. Pickwick’s trademark for Quintessence was filed on December 10, 1976 with the initial Q made to look like a clef symbol. The label was devoted to the licensed reissue of historic classical recordings. The idea was printed on the record jackets: "Critically acclaimed recordings of the basic repertoire which belong in every library of great music" and also promised these were "Carefully remastered from the original master tapes, recut on the latest Neumann Disc cutting lathe, lathes and pressed on virgin vinyl." R. Peter Munves was the executive responsible for the label. Munves had earlier worked for Columbia Records and RCA Records classical music divisions. He said to ''Time'' magazine in 1971 “You can call me the P.T. Barnum of the classics”. Many of the Quintessence records were originally included in ''Reader's Digest'' boxed sets produced by Decca Record ...

The album was first released in two parts on separate LPs entitles ''Eighty Five Minutes'' in 1986 then with additional material as two separate CDs entitled ''Quintessence'' in 1997 and finally as a single 2-CD set in 2007. Reception Allmusic's François Couture noted "The true quintessence of Stevens' vision can be heard as the musicians give the best of themselves, remaining very personal in their playing (just compare Parker and Watts all the way through), while constantly keeping the focus on the group and the music happening here and now. Beautiful". On All About Jazz Nic Jones called it "one of the seminal recorded documents of free improvisation" and said "Viewed overall, this is a release that should appe ...

Aether (classical Element)
According to ancient and medieval science, aether (, alternative spellings include ''æther'', ''aither'', and ''ether''), also known as the fifth element or quintessence, is the material that fills the region of the universe beyond the terrestrial sphere. The concept of aether was used in several theories to explain several natural phenomena, such as the traveling of light and gravity. In the late 19th century, physicists postulated that aether permeated all throughout space, providing a medium through which light could travel in a vacuum, but evidence for the presence of such a medium was not found in the Michelson–Morley experiment, and this result has been interpreted as meaning that no such luminiferous aether exists. Mythological origins The word (''aithḗr'') in Homeric Greek means "pure, fresh air" or "clear sky". In Greek mythology, it was thought to be the pure essence that the gods breathed, filling the space where they lived, analogous to the '' air'' br ...

In Quintessence
"In Quintessence" is the first song on Squeeze's 1981 album '' East Side Story''. The lyrics were written by Chris Difford and the music by Glenn Tilbrook. Background Chris Difford said, "The lyric is autobiographical in some ways, another song that mentions masturbation." When discussing the lyrics, Glenn Tilbrook said, "The bloke who the lyric was about is now a very responsible teacher working just outside Liverpool. I saw him a couple of months ago and he said how perfectly this described his life at the time. Chris was spot on in analysing him as someone who liked smoking joints and shagging birds, but what's wrong with that?" Tilbrook stated, "Musically it was my tip of the hat to Elvis ostello He'd borrowed the riff from 'Time Is Tight' and used it on a song called 'Temptation'. I thought it would be funny to use that riff again for 'In Quintessence' and expand it." The song also features a solo from Tilbrook, who recalled "working that solo out in the bathroom in the ...

Quintessence (Borknagar Album)
''Quintessence'' is the fourth studio album by Norwegian metal band Borknagar. It was recorded at The Abyss Studios in January 2000 and mixed by Peter Tägtgren. According to the members of the band, this album was initially meant to be a relatively straightforward black metal release, as indicated by the production quality and the emphasis on harsh vocals rather than clean singing. Vocalist Simen "ICS Vortex" Hestnæs plays bass guitar on the album, following the departure of former bassist Kai K. Lie prior to recording sessions for the album. Original keyboardist Ivar Bjørnson and drummer Eric "Grim" Brødreskift were also replaced by Lars A. Nedland and Asgeir Mickelson respectively. ''Quintessence'' would also be the last Borknagar album to feature Hestnæs, who left to join Dimmu Borgir (reportedly due to an ultimatum on Øystein Brun's part), until his return in 2010. Track listing Personnel Borknagar * Simen Hestnæs (credited as "ICS Vortex") – vocals, ba ...
