Quiet Life (song)
"Quiet Life" is a song by the British new wave band Japan (band), Japan. It is the title track of their 1979 album ''Quiet Life''. The lyrics to the song refer to the problems the band was going through at the time. They had lost their US record contract and Hansa Records had been pressuring them for a hit single in the UK. "Quiet Life" was first released as a single in Japan in December 1979 with the B-side "Halloween". In March 1980, it was released in Germany and the Netherlands with the B-side "I Second That Emotion#Japan version, Second That Emotion", whereas in the UK "Quiet Life" was released as the B-side of the unsuccessful "Second That Emotion". Following the commercial success of the band's 1981 album ''Tin Drum (album), Tin Drum'', Hansa Records reissued the song as a single that year to promote the band's upcoming compilation album ''Assemblage (album), Assemblage''. Japan (band)
Japan were an English new wave band formed in 1974 in Catford, South London by David Sylvian (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steve Jansen (drums) and Mick Karn (bass guitar), joined by Richard Barbieri (keyboards) and Rob Dean (lead guitar) the following year. Initially a glam rock-inspired band, Japan developed their sound and androgynous look to incorporate electronic music and foreign influences. The band achieved success in the late 1970s and early 1980s, releasing nine UK top 40 hits, including the 1982 top 5 hit single " Ghosts", and scoring a UK top 5 with the live album ''Oil on Canvas'' (1983). The band split in December 1982, just as they were beginning to experience commercial success in the UK and abroad. "Life in Tokyo" is a song by the British band Japan. A collaboration with disco producer Giorgio Moroder, who also co-wrote the song with David Sylvian, it marked a change of direction from the band's previous sound. Originally released as a single in 1979, it was reissued twice before it finally became a hit on the UK Singles Chart in 1982. Composition The song was written by Giorgio Moroder and band vocalist David Sylvian. The musical style is in line with Moroder's electronic disco style as already employed on albums by Donna Summer, Munich Machine and on his own ''From Here to Eternity'' in 1977. Moroder's trademark arpeggiated synthesiser can be heard throughout the track. ''Tin Drum'' is the fifth and final studio album by English band Japan, released in November 1981 by record label Virgin. It peaked at No. 12 on the UK charts, and featured the top 5 single " Ghosts". It has received acclaim as the band's best and most original work. Content ''Tin Drum'' continued the band's now-established mix of electronic elements with traditional instrumentation, but leans far more towards Far Eastern influences than any of their previous albums. Lead guitarist Rob Dean had departed in May 1981 and vocalist/songwriter/second guitarist David Sylvian had taken on his duties, which had been very greatly reduced by the band's change of musical direction. Visions of China is a song by English new wave band Japan, released in October 1981 as the second single from their 1981 album '' Tin Drum'', which was released on 13 November. The single reached number 32 on the UK Singles Chart. Content The B-side of the 7" is a remix of "Taking Islands in Africa", the final track on their previous album ''Gentlemen Take Polaroids'' (1980). John Punter (born 27 January 1949) is a former English record producer and recording engineer. He has worked with many bands and musicians, such as Japan, Procol Harum, Roxy Music, Doctors of Madness, Sad Café and Slade. His career in music spanned over 30 years and many different genres. He is now retired from the entertainment business, and ran a small bar in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. On July 24, 2019, he became a citizen of Canada. ''Quiet Life'' is the third studio album by English new wave band Japan, first released on 17 November 1979 in Canada by record label Hansa (it would be released in the UK some weeks later). The album was a transition from the glam rock-influenced style of previous albums to a synth-pop style. Though sales were initially slow, ''Quiet Life'' was the band's first album to chart and was later certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry for sales in excess of 100,000 copies.
