Queensland Wind Orchestra
The Queensland Wind Orchestra is a wind ensemble based in Brisbane, Australia. Established in 2004, it performs a series of public performances each year in and around Brisbane. The group works with a variety of professional conductors and soloists and strives to continually bring new and exciting wind band music to its audiences. The ensemble utilises flexible instrumentation and the concept of one player per part, in line with Frederick Fennell's 1952 concept of the Eastman Wind Ensemble. The orchestra is a non-profit incorporated association managed by an elected committee of its performing members and is a community-based ensemble. It requires all players to audition for entry to the group and maintains a high standard of musicianship. The 40 to 45 members include musicians from many backgrounds, including medicine, science, nursing, engineering, law and others, as well as university music students, graduates and teachers. A concert band, also called a wind band, wind ensemble, wind symphony, wind orchestra, symphonic band, the symphonic winds, or symphonic wind ensemble, is a performing ensemble consisting of members of the woodwind, brass, and percussion families of instruments, and occasionally including the harp, double bass, or bass guitar. On rare occasions, additional, non-traditional instruments may be added to such ensembles such as piano, synthesizer, or electric guitar. Concert band music generally includes original wind instrument, wind compositions, concert marches, transcriptions of orchestral arrangements, light music, and pop music, popular music. Though the concert band does have similar instrumentation to the marching band, a marching band's main purpose is to perform while marching. Frederick Fennell
Frederick Fennell (July 2, 1914 – December 7, 2004) was an internationally recognized conductor and one of the primary figures in promoting the Eastman Wind Ensemble as a performing group. He was also influential as a band pedagogue, and greatly affected the field of music education in the US and abroad. In Fennell's New York Times obituary, colleague Jerry F. Eastman Wind Ensemble
The Eastman Wind Ensemble was founded by conductor Frederick Fennell at the Eastman School of Music in 1952. The ensemble is often credited with helping redefine the performance of wind band music. At the time, concert bands used all of their players for every piece, regardless of the piece's original orchestration. If there was not a part for a specific instrument on a piece — for example, a contrabass clarinet or a string bass— the conductor or publisher would have an arranger add one or simply have that instrument double another instrument— the string bass could play the tuba part, for instance. Also, bigger was better, and even though there would normally be three clarinet parts, many university concert bands would have 20 or 30 clarinets, or more. Fennell redefined the wind band by having one player on each part, using only the instrumentation for each piece specified by the composer.
