Queensland Literary Award
The Queensland Literary Awards is an awards program established in 2012 by the Queensland literary community, funded by sponsors and administered by the State Library of Queensland. Like the former Queensland Premier's Literary Awards, the QLAs celebrate and promote outstanding Australian writing. The awards aim to seek out, recognize and nurture great talent in Australian writing. They draw national and international attention to some of our best writers and to Queensland's recognition of outstanding Australian literature and publishing. These Awards have a focus on supporting new writing through the Emerging Queensland Writer – Manuscript Award and Unpublished Indigenous writer – David Unaipon Award. Nardi Simpson
Nardi Simpson (born 1975) is a Yuwaalaraay musician and writer in Australia. She is a founding member of the Indigenous folk group Stiff Gins. Her debut novel, ''Song of the Crocodile'', was published in 2020. Early life and education Nardi Simpson was born in Sydney in 1975. Her family is Yuwaalaraay Aboriginal Australian from New South Wales, and she spent a significant portion of her childhood visiting the area. After attending Eora College, she graduated from the University of Sydney with a bachelor's degree in Aboriginal studies. Music Simpson has been a musician for over two decades. She is a member of the Indigenous folk group Stiff Gins, which she co-founded in 1999. Mez Breeze
Mez Breeze is an Australian-based artist and practitioner of net.art, working primarily with code poetry, electronic literature, mezangelle, and digital games. Born Mary-Anne Breeze, she uses a number of avatar nicknames, including Mez and Netwurker. She received degrees in both Applied Social Science sychologyat Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, Australia in 1991 and Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong in Australia in 2001. Sarah Holland-Batt
Sarah Holland-Batt is a contemporary Australian poet, critic, and academic. Early life and education Born in Southport, Queensland, Sarah Holland-Batt grew up in Australia and Denver, Colorado. She was educated at the University of Queensland, where she received First Class Honours in Literary Studies, an MPhil and PhD, and at New York University, where she was a Fulbright Scholar and attained an M.F.A. Ellen Van Neerven
Ellen van Neerven (born 1990) is an Aboriginal Australian author, educator and editor. They are queer and non-binary. Their first work of fiction, ''Heat and Light'' (2013), won several awards, and in 2019 Van Neerven won the Queensland Premier's Young Publishers and Writers Award. Their second collection of poetry, ''Throat'' (2020), won three awards at the 2021 New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards, including Book of the Year. Early life and education Van Neerven was born in 1990 to Dutch and Aboriginal parents, and is of the Mununjali clan of the Yugambeh nation. Jaclyn Moriarty
Jaclyn Moriarty (born 1968 in Perth) is an Australian novelist, most known for her young adult literature. She is a recipient of the Davitt Award and the Aurealis Award for best children's fiction. Biography Moriarty was raised in the north-west suburbs of Sydney. She has four sisters and one brother. Two of her sisters, Liane and Nicola, are also novelists. Moriarty studied English and Law at the University of Sydney upon graduating from high school. Debra Adelaide (born 1958) is an Australian novelist, writer and academic. She teaches creative writing at the University of Technology Sydney. Biography Adelaide was born in Sydney and grew up in the Sutherland Shire. A contemporary of writers Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Carey, she attended Gymea High School and then via a teacher's scholarship, she completed a BA (Honours) and MA (Honours) in English literature at the University of Sydney. She then completed a PhD in Australian women’s literature in 1991, and in the process completed her first book, a bibliography of Australian women's literature. Alison Whittaker
Alison Whittaker is a Gomeroi writer and a senior researcher at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. A review in ''World Literature Today'' called her "Australia's most important recently emerged poet". Early life and education Whittaker's mother is Gomeroi and her father was not an indigenous Australian. She grew up on the floodplains of Gunnedah near the Namoi River in New South Wales. Carrie Tiffany
Carrie Tiffany (born 1965) is an English-born Australian novelist and former park ranger. Biography Tiffany was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire and migrated to Australia with her family in the early 1970s. She grew up in Perth, Western Australia. In her early twenties she worked as a park ranger in Central Australia. She moved to Melbourne in 1988 where she began work as a writer, focusing mainly on agriculture. Melissa Lucashenko is an Indigenous Australian writer of adult literary fiction and literary non-fiction, who has also written novels for teenagers.
