Queens Island F.C.
Queen's Island was a football club from Belfast, Northern Ireland. The team was champion of the Irish League for the 1923/24 season and winner of the Irish Cup in 1924. History Queen's Island Football Club was formed in the summer of 1920, their first match was a friendly against Ulster Rangers, they were elected to the Intermediate League for the start of the 1920/21 season, they finished 5th place in the Intermediate League whilst winning the Intermediate Cup at their first attempt, defeating Forth River 2-0 in the final at Solitude on St Patrick's Day 1921. After their debut season in the Irish Intermediate League, Queen's Island applied to join the Irish League, Willowfield and Belfast United also applied but Queen's Island were elected. At the end of the 1928/29 season, they were voted out of the Irish League, being replaced by Derry City. Ireland's Saturday Night
''Ireland's Saturday Night'' was a Northern Ireland sports newspaper, which was part of the Belfast Telegraph group. It was launched in 1894 under its original title, ''Ulster Saturday Night'', changing to ''Ireland's Saturday Night'' in 1896 and running two separate editions; one for north and one for the south of Ireland. It continued to carry the nickname ''The Ulster''. The paper was also known as ''The Pink'', as it was originally printed on pink paper until 1917. This was to distinguish the paper from the main daily at the time, ''The Belfast Evening Telegraph''. John Gough (footballer)
John Gough was an Irish football goalkeeper who played in the Irish League for Queen's Island and Ballymena during the 1920s and also won a solitary international cap for Ireland. Career Gough was a well decorated member of the Queen's Island team that experienced great success in the Irish League during the 1920s. The club and John's defining season came during the 1923-24 campaign when they won four domestic trophies (Irish League championship, Irish Cup, City Cup and County Antrim Shield). During his impressive season, Gough was selected to represent Ireland against South Africa in a friendly game at Solitude in September 1924. This was the South African's first ever official international game. Joe Gowdy
Joseph Gowdy (born 7 December 1897) was a footballer from Northern Ireland who played as a right half, although in his early career he was a centre forward and in latter years was deployed at centre half. He came to prominence after World War I as a goalscorer with Glentoran in his native Belfast, and from there moved to Scotland with Falkirk in November 1920; however, he failed to lead the attack as had been hoped, with the club bringing in Englishman Syd Puddefoot for a record fee in 1922. Gowdy is said to have then returned to Ireland without informing Falkirk, intending to play for Glentoran again while the Scottish club tried to have him return to them without success. It was agreed that he would instead play on loan with Queen's Island in Belfast. The move worked out well for player and club as Queen's Island won the double of Irish Football League and Irish Cup in the 1923–24 season. Tucker Croft
Thomas "Tucker" Croft was an Irish international footballer who played professionally in Ireland and the United States as an inside right. Club Born in Belfast, Croft played in his native Ireland for Dundela, Glentoran and Queen's Island. In 1924, he left Northern Ireland for the United States, joining the Fall River of the American Soccer League. He was under contract to Queen's Island at the time and the move led to his suspension by the IFA. During his time with the 'Marksmen' he was noted for his discipline problems and in 1925, he petitioned the Irish Football Association for re-admittance. When this was denied, he returned to Fall River. In 1926, Croft began the season with Fall River, but moved to J & P Coats after fourteen games. Croft was back with Fall River for the start of the 1927–1928 season, but quickly moved to the Newark Skeeters. In December 1927, the New York Nationals purchased Croft's contract. Tom Cowan (Irish Footballer)
Thomas Cowan (born 28 August 1969) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a defender. During his career he played for Clyde, Rangers, Sheffield United, Stoke City, Huddersfield Town, Burnley, Cambridge United, Peterborough United, York City, Dundee, Carlisle United, Barrow, Workington, Hucknall Town, Stalybridge Celtic, Hyde United and Retford United. Career Cowan was born in Bellshill and began his career with Holytown Colts and Netherdale Boys Club before joining Clyde in 1988; he spent most of the 1988–89 season playing for Clyde while also working in a Lanarkshire steelworks and was then signed by Rangers before the end of that campaign, at the end of which the Glasgow club won the Scottish Premier Division. City Cup (Northern Ireland)
The City Cup is a now-defunct football cup competition which involved teams from Northern Ireland (and prior to 1921, teams from Ireland). The tournament ran from 1894 and ceased to exist in 1976. The physical trophy the teams played for was called the Dunville Cup and this trophy is now presented to the winners of the Northern Ireland Football League Cup, which began in 1987. History A cup tournament consisting solely of Belfast clubs had been mooted as early as 1892, although it was not until two years later that the competition was organised. While the City Cup began as a competition for Belfast clubs only, from 1905 to 1911 Dublin-based club Shelbourne also participated. County Antrim Shield
The County Antrim & District Football Association Senior Shield (more commonly known as the County Antrim Shield) is a football competition in Northern Ireland. The competition is open to senior teams who are members of the North East Ulster Football Association (also known as the County Antrim & District Football Association) (membership of which extends geographically beyond County Antrim itself), often plus intermediate teams who qualify via the Steel & Sons Cup, depending on the numbers required. For the 2010–11 and 2011-12 seasons, only the winners took part. The current Shield champions are Larne, who beat Linfield 1–0 in the 2021–22 final, winning the trophy for a second successive year. During the later 1980s and early 1990s, the North East Ulster F.A. invited senior clubs from outside its jurisdiction to participate. IFA Premiership
The NIFL Premiership, known as the Danske Bank Premiership for sponsorship purposes, and colloquially as the Irish League or Irish Premiership, is a professional association football league which operates as the highest division of the Northern Ireland Football League – the national league in Northern Ireland. The Premiership was established as the ''IFA Premiership'' in 2008 under the auspices of the Irish Football Association, before the Northern Ireland Football League was created for the start of the 2013–14 season. At the end of the season, the champion club is presented with the Gibson Cup. Linfield are the current champions, having won their fourth consecutive title and 56th Irish League championship overall, after a 2–0 victory over Coleraine on 30 April 2022.
