The Queen Victoria Hospital, Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital or Queen Victoria Maternity Home is a defunct hospital that operated in Johannesburg starting in 1904. History The first Queen Victoria Hospital building was designed by Allen Wilson and could accommodate 50 patients. It was built in 1904 on Siemert Road and administered by the Guild of Loyal Woman. In 1906, it moved to Milner Park. In 1913 it became a branch of the Johannesburg Hospital. In 1943 a new building was built on Sam Hancock Street, designed by Gordon Leith George Esslemont Gordon Leith (1885–1965) was a South African architect. Doornfontein is an inner-city suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, located to the east of the city centre, Region 8. History The area, whose name means "thorn fountain", was originally the southern part of a farm owned by Frederick Jacobus Bezuidenhout, and was proclaimed a public diggings after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886. The suburb was laid out in the late 1880s by Thomas Yeo, and became the first residential suburb of Johannesburg. In 1897 the freehold of the suburb was bought by a company owned by the mining magnate Barney Barnato, and the district became known as "Millionaire's Row". Following the Anglo-Boer War, many of the wealthier residents moved north to Parktown, and Doornfontein, or "Doorie", became home to many Jewish immigrants. Guild Of Loyal Women
The Guild of Loyal Women of South Africa was a voluntary organisation which identified, marked and maintained Second Boer War graves and military graveyards. A prominent founder member was the author and conservationist, Dorothea Fairbridge (1862–1931). History The Guild was founded in early 1900, and by June of that year had 3,000 members mainly in the Cape Colony. By the end of the year it had branches in Natal and there were plans for branches in the Free State and the Transvaal. Although the members considered themselves non-political (in the sense of local party politics) as the name suggests the movement attracted members from those loyal to the British Crown, and it received royal patronage in December 1900.
