''Queen High Straight'' is the fourth solo album by former Transvision Vamp lead singer Wendy James. Released on 1 May 2020, it was written, produced and mixed by James. Background The album took three years from inception, through writing stage, to the final masters for the 20 tracks that feature on the album. References and influences range from Sergio Mendes for the title track, Django Reinhardt for 'I'll Be Here When The Morning Comes', and Motown for 'Little Melvin' and 'Here Comes the Beautiful One' The album was released physically on CD, and as a double vinyl album. The album was also released as a digital download. Wendy James (born 21 January 1966) is an English singer-songwriter most notable for her work with the pop band Transvision Vamp. Transvision Vamp Born in London to Norwegian parents, James was adopted soon after birth. Released in February 2016, it was written and produced by James, except for the final two tracks, which were cover versions of songs by Fred "Sonic" Smith and Bob Dylan. Background The album was recorded mainly in New York City, with the final two tracks being recorded in Berkeley, California to accommodate James Williamson. The album cover features a photograph of James topless, of which she stated "I don’t actually find it a particularly sexual shot in as much as you look at images of Rhianna or the way I was in the old days being flirtatious and provocative ..Much more like an art or fashion photograph or sculpture or just a female anatomy as it is in other areas of creativity but not the music business." Transvision Vamp
Transvision Vamp were an English pop rock band. Formed in 1986 by Nick Christian Sayer and Wendy James, the band enjoyed chart success in the late 1980s, particularly in 1989. James, the lead singer and focal-point of the group, attracted media attention with her sexually charged and rebellious image. They scored 10 UK chart hits and also enjoyed considerable success in Australia. Their top single was 1989's "Baby I Don't Care", which reached number three on the UK and Australian charts. Career The band's original line-up was James, Sayer, Dave Parsons (bass), Tex Axile (keyboards) and Pol Burton (drums). Parsons and Axile had both been in punk bands prior to joining the band; Parsons in The Partisans, and Axile in various bands, most notably The Moors Murderers and X-Ray Spex offshoot Agent Orange.
