Queen's College (Barbados)
Queen's College is a public secondary school in Barbados that was established in 1883. It is a multi-racial school with students drawn from a wide cross-section of the Barbadian community. It comprises eleven departments in which approximately thirty-three subject areas are taught. Annually a high percentage of Queen's College graduates enter universities in the West Indies, Great Britain, Canada and the United States. History Queen's College was established as a result of the recommendation of an Education Commission whose report suggested that Barbados required a first grade school for girls similar to that in the top educational institutions in Great Britain. The school commenced operations at Constitution Road in Bridgetown on 29 January 1883 with thirty-three female students. Their ages ranged from three to nineteen. Esther Byer-Suckoo
Esther R. Byer-Suckoo (born 1968) is a Barbadian physician and politician. She is the former Barbados Minister of Labor and a member of the Democratic Labour Party. Early life and education Esther Byer-Suckoo was born on September 10, 1968, in Saint George. She attended St. Luke’s Primary School and Queen's College. She proceeded to attend University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. She earned her PhD as a physician in 1993. After graduation, she worked at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Bridgetown in the Barbados. Career Byer-Suckoo founded the Ellerton Medical Centre in 1997. In 2001 and 2005, she served as a medical missionary in Malawi and Uganda, respectively. Elizabeth Thompson
Elizabeth Southerden Thompson (3 November 1846 – 2 October 1933), later known as Lady Butler, was a British painter who specialised in painting scenes from British military campaigns and battles, including the Crimean War and the Napoleonic Wars. Her notable works include ''The Roll Call'' (purchased by Queen Victoria), '' The Defence of Rorke's Drift'', and ''Scotland Forever!'' (showing the Scots Greys at Waterloo). Patricia Symmonds
Dame Olga Patricia Symmonds, GCM, DBE (18 October 1925 - 27 May 2020), best known as Patricia Symmonds, was a Barbadian politician, member of the Senate of Barbados and a former teacher. The only daughter of Algernon French Symmonds and his wife, Olga (née Harper), she is the elder sister of Barbadian diplomat, Algernon Washington Symmonds. She was educated at Queen's College, Barbados, and travelled to the United Kingdom to study at the University of Reading and the Institute of Education. As a teacher from 1945 to 1985, she was Deputy Principal of the St. Michael School, Saint Michael, Barbados from 1963 to 1976, then Principal of the school from 1976 to 1985. Monica Skeete
Monica Skeete (née Martineau; 1923–1997) was a Grenadian poet, writer and teacher. Her work was first published in the Barbadian literary magazine ''BIM'' in 1946. Her 1978 collection of short stories, ''Time Out'', was published by Nelson Caribbean in their Authors of the Caribbean series, to support a growing educational market for Caribbean literature. Other short stories were anthologised in several publications. She also wrote novels. Much of her career was spent as a history teacher at Queen's College, Barbados. She died in 1997. Mia Mottley
Mia Amor Mottley, (born 1 October 1965) is a Barbadian politician and attorney who has served as the eighth prime minister of Barbados since 2018 and as Leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) since 2008. Mottley is the first woman to hold either position. She is also Barbados' first prime minister under its republican system, following constitutional changes she introduced that abolished the country's constitutional monarchy. Mottley has been the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Saint Michael North East since 1994. Dame Billie Antoinette Miller, DA, OOC (born 8 January 1944) is a Barbadian politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister. Miller is a member of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). Sandra Mason
Dame Sandra Prunella Mason (born 17 January 1949) is a Barbadian politician, lawyer, and diplomat who is serving as the first president of Barbados since 2021. She was previously the eighth and final governor-general of Barbados from 2018 to 2021, the second woman to hold the office. On 20 October 2021, Mason was elected by the Parliament of Barbados to become the country's first president, and took office on 30 November 2021, when Barbados ceased to be a constitutional monarchy and became a republic. Daphne Joseph-Hackett
Daphne Joseph-Hackett (also known as Miss Hackett 1915–1988) was a Bajan teacher, actor and theatre producer. Her contributions to the development of the arts in Barbados were recognized with the Order of Barbados's Silver Service Star. The annual award given at the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts and the Queen's Park Theatre, were renamed in her honor. Biography Daphne Joseph-Hackett was born in 1915 in Barbados. Training as a teacher, she began her career teaching in Grenada. After eleven years, she returned to Barbados. She taught Latin at Queen's College in Bridgetown.
