Quebec Superior Court
The Superior Court of Quebec (french: Cour supérieure du Québec) is a superior trial court in the Province of Quebec, in Canada. It consists of 157 judges who are appointed by the federal government. Appeals from this court are taken to the Quebec Court of Appeal. Jurisdiction The Superior Court of Quebec is the court of original general jurisdiction, which hears all cases not expressly assigned to another court or administrative body. It possesses both criminal and civil jurisdiction. It also hears certain appeals in criminal and penal matters. Moreover, it also possesses exclusive jurisdiction to hear and determine class actions and applications for injunctive relief. François-Xavier Lemieux (Quebec MLA)
Sir François-Xavier Lemieux (April 9, 1851 – July 18, 1933), often referred to as F.X. Lemieux, was a Quebec lawyer, judge and political figure. He represented Lévis in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1883 to 1892 and Bonaventure from 1894 to 1897. Lemieux was also Louis Riel's lawyer in 1885. He was born at Lévis in 1851 and studied at the college there, at Quebec City and the Université Laval. He articled in law, was called to the Quebec bar in 1872 and became a successful criminal lawyer. In 1874, he married Diane, the daughter of judge Marc-Aurèle Plamondon. Lemieux was the head of Louis Riel's defence team, which included several other leading lawyers from eastern Canada, at his trial for high treason in 1885. Some believe that Riel's lawyers may not have taken advantage of available options for avoiding the death penalty. Lyse Lemieux (judge)
Lyse Lemieux (born 1936) is the former Chief Justice of the Quebec Superior Court from 1996 until 2004. Lemieux was the first and only woman to ever hold the office of Chief Justice in the Province of Quebec until the appointment of Marie-Anne Paquette in 2022. Lemieux studied law at the Université de Montréal and was admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1962. She held a variety of positions in the provincial government, becoming a specialist in expropriation. Lemieux was appointed a justice of the Superior Court of Quebec in 1978 and in 1994 was named an Associate Chief Justice. Jules Deschênes, (June 7, 1923 – May 10, 2000) was a Canadian Quebec Superior Court judge. Born in Montreal, to Wilfrid Deschênes and Berthe Bérard, he completed grade school under the supervision of les Clercs de Saint-Viateur and classical studies under les Messieurs de Saint-Sulpice. He graduated from the University of Montreal and was admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1946. From 1946 to 1960 he practiced law. In 1961, he was named Queen's Counsel. In 1962 he was elected to the Council of the Bar of Montreal. In 1962 he started to teach law at the University of Montreal. On January 8, 1964 he accepted to prosecute at the Commission of Inquiry into the famous Coffin affair. In 1972 he was appointed a Justice of the Quebec Court of Appeal. Frédéric Dorion (August 23, 1898 – July 15, 1981) was a Quebec politician and chief justice. He led a group of Independent MPs in the House of Commons of Canada who were opposed to the implementation of conscription during World War II. Early life Dorion studied at Laval University but left in order to enlist in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. Albert Sévigny
Albert Sévigny, (December 31, 1881 – May 14, 1961) was a Canadian politician. Life and career Sévigny was born in Tingwick, Quebec. He opened a law practice in Quebec City in 1905. Two years later, he was a candidate for the Quebec Conservative Party in a provincial by-election, but was defeated. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1911 federal election. His election was facilitated by an informal alliance between the Conservatives and the Nationalists led by Henri Bourassa because of Sevigny's sympathy with Bourassa's views. In Parliament, Sevigny became a supporter of Canadian participation in World War I despite the strong opposition of most Quebecers, and became a staunch Conservative.
