Quadrille (1938 Film)
''Quadrille'' is a 1938 French comedy film directed by Sacha Guitry and starring Guitry, Gaby Morlay and Jacqueline Delubac.The A to Z of French Cinema p.197 It was shot at the Joinville Studios in Paris and on location around the city. The film's sets were designed by the art director Jean Perrier. The title refers to the quadrille, a dance in which the participants keep changing partners. It was later remade as a film of the same title by Valérie Lemercier. Synopsis In Paris the arrival of an American film star upsets the routine of a French newspaper editor and his two female companions. Sacha Guitry
Alexandre-Pierre Georges "Sacha" Guitry (; 21 February 188524 July 1957) was a French stage actor, film actor, director, screenwriter, and playwright of the boulevard theatre. He was the son of a leading French actor, Lucien Guitry, and followed his father into the theatrical profession. He became known for his stage performances, particularly in boulevardier roles. He was also a prolific playwright, writing 115 plays throughout his career. He was married five times, always to rising actresses whose careers he furthered. Probably his best-known wife was Yvonne Printemps to whom he was married between 1919 and 1932. Guitry's plays range from historical dramas to contemporary light comedies. Some have musical scores, by composers including André Messager and Reynaldo Hahn. When silent films became popular Guitry avoided them, finding the lack of spoken dialogue fatal to dramatic impact. Valérie Lemercier (; born 9 March 1964) is a French actress, screenwriter, director and singer. Life and career Born in Dieppe, Seine-Maritime as the daughter of farmers, Lemercier grew up in Gonzeville and then studied at the Rouen Conservatoire - a dance, music and drama school. Lemercier made her screen debut in 1988, in the television series ''Palace''. Lemercier has won two César Awards for her supporting roles in ''Les Visiteurs'' (1993) and ''Fauteuils d'orchestre'' (2007), and hosted the award ceremony in 2006 and 2007.
