Qiaojia
Qiaojia County () is a county in the northeast of Yunnan province, China, bordering Sichuan province to the north and west. The population was 625,000 in 2019, 33,200 of whom belonged to ethnic minorities. It is both the southernmost and westernmost county-level division of Zhaotong City and located entirely on the right bank of the Jinsha River. The river valleys of Qiaojia are some of the lowest points in Yunnan province, at around 900 meters. The name of the county literally means 'City of industrious artisans'. The county is noted for being the site of the Baihetan Dam, located 40 km from the county seat. Construction of the dam required resettlement of 44,919 Qiaojia residents. Qiaojia is located at the junction of several geological faults. 2014 Ludian Earthquake
The 2014 Ludian earthquake struck Ludian County, Yunnan, China, with a moment magnitude of 6.1 on 3 August. The earthquake killed at least 617 people, injuring at least 2,400 others. , 112 people remain missing. Over 12,000 houses collapsed and 30,000 were damaged. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred WSW of Zhaotong city at 16:03 local time (08:03 UTC). Tectonic setting The Ludian earthquake occurred at 16:03, Beijing time (08:03 UTC), on 3 August 2014. American geological surveys indicated that the epicenter was WSW of Zhaotong city at a depth of , in the quake-prone province of Yunnan in southwestern China, about from Zhaotong. It was especially felt in the province of Yunnan, and less in the provinces of Guizhou and Sichuan. 2020 Qiaojia Earthquake
The 2020 Qiaojia earthquake () occurred in Yunnan, China, 42 km west of Zhaotong on May 18, 21:48 local time (2020-05-18 13:48 UTC). The moment magnitude 5.1 quake occurred at a depth of 10 km. Various buildings were damaged, and one house collapsed in Zhaoyang District. Four people were killed while 24 people were injured. Tectonic setting The lateral spreading of the thickened crust of the Tibetan Plateau, caused by the ongoing collision between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, has led to the presence of many active fault zones within the Sichuan-Yunnan region. Zhaotong
Zhaotong () is a prefecture-level city located in the northeast corner of Yunnan province, China, bordering the provinces of Guizhou to the south and southeast and Sichuan to the northeast, north, and west. History Zhaotong has historic and cultural links to the Shu (Sichuan basin) region. Yi people consider Zhaotong to be their homeland (called Zizipuwu). Zhaotong was part of Zhuti County (朱提縣) during Han to Tang dynasties. Zhaotong belonged to the Nanzhao then Dali Kingdom until the Mongols destroyed the latter in the 13th century. Baihetan Dam
The Baihetan Dam () is a large hydroelectric dam on the Jinsha River, an upper stretch of the Yangtze River in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, in southwest China. The dam is a 289-meter-tall double-curvature arch dam with a crest elevation of 827 m, and a width of 72 m at the base and 13 m at the crest. It is considered to be the last large hydropower project in China after a series of projects starting with the Three Gorges Dam. It is also the second largest hydropower plant in the world. The hydropower station is equipped with 16 hydro-generating units that each have a capacity of 1 million kilowatts, making it the largest single-unit capacity globally.
