Qatari Municipal Elections, 2007
Municipal elections were held in Qatar on 1 April 2007 for the third time. Three women and 122 men ran for 29 seats in the Central Municipal Council. About 28,000 citizens of the 174,000 Qataris were able to vote, International Herald Tribune, 31 March 2007 and overall turnout was 51.1 per cent. Qatar
Qatar (, ; ar, قطر, Qaṭar ; local vernacular pronunciation: ), officially the State of Qatar,) is a country in Western Asia. It occupies the Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East; it shares its sole land border with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf. The Gulf of Bahrain, an inlet of the Persian Gulf, separates Qatar from nearby Bahrain. The capital is Doha, home to over 80% of the country's inhabitants, and the land area is mostly made up of flat, low-lying desert. Central Municipal Council
The first municipal council in Qatar was formed in the early 1950s and it was reorganized in 1956. Doha Municipality, Doha municipality came into being in May 1963. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs was established in 1972 as a government body responsible for supervising the functions of municipalities. Decree No 4 for 1963 organized, for the first time, the election and appointment of the members of the municipal council. Law No 11 for 1963 followed. It stipulated that the municipal council is formed by a decree and that the appointment of the members is based on the nomination of the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture. The first joint meeting of municipal councils in the country was held in 1983. Most of the credit goes to this meeting in deciding to form a central municipal council to replace the numerous municipal councils. Sheikha Yousuf Hasan Al Jufairi
Sheikha bint Yousuf Al-Jufairi (Arabic: شيخة بنت يوسف الجفيري) is a Qatari politician. Since 2003, she has served on the Central Municipal Council (CMC) in Qatar from the Old Airport (Doha), Airport constituency. She holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Beirut Arab University, Arab University of Beirut. She is the Head of the Legal Committee of the Council. In October 2021 she was one of two women appointed to Qatar's advisory Shura Council (Qatar), Shura Council. Madinat Ash Shamal
Madinat ash Shamal ( ar, الشمال) is the capital city of the municipality of Al Shamal in Qatar. Located more than north of Qatar's capital Doha, the city was delimited in 1988 and shares its boundaries with Ar Ru'ays to the east and Abu Dhalouf to the west. Etymology The city's name "Madinat ash Shamal" translates to "city of the north". Geography Madinat ash Shamal is located at a distance of over 100 km of the capital Doha, 27 km away from Zubarah, 24 km away from Fuwayrit, 76 km away from Al Khor, and 122 km away from Al Wakrah. The political system of Qatar is a semi-constitutional monarchy with the emir as head of state and chief executive, and the prime minister as the head of government.
