''Putnam, the Iron Son of '76'' is an 1844 American play by Nathaniel Bannister, and his most popular play. The play is about American Revolutionary War hero Israel Putnam. Starting on August 5, 1844, it played for 78 consecutive nights (not counting Sundays) in New York at the Bowery Theatre, produced by Thomas S. Hamblin, an astounding success for its time, and likely the longest New York run of its time. It featured the live horse "Black Vulture", which was a big audience draw.Paterson, Alexander D. The ''New York Courier and Enquirer'', properly called the ''Morning Courier and New-York Enquirer'', was a daily broadsheet newspaper published in New York City from June 1829 until June 1861, when it was merged into the ''New York World''. Throughout its existence it was edited by newspaper publisher James Watson Webb. It was closely connected with the rise and fall of the United States Whig Party, and was noted for its careful coverage of New York Harbor shipping news and its close attention to speeches and events in the United States Congress. Nathaniel Bannister
Nathaniel Harrington Bannister (January 13, 1813 – November 2, 1847) was an American actor and playwright. Bowery Theatre
The Bowery Theatre was a playhouse on the Bowery in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Although it was founded by rich families to compete with the upscale Park Theatre, the Bowery saw its most successful period under the populist, pro-American management of Thomas Hamblin in the 1830s and 1840s. By the 1850s, the theatre came to cater to immigrant groups such as the Irish, Germans, and Chinese. It burned down four times in 17 years, a fire in 1929 destroying it for good. Although the theatre's name changed several times (Thalia Theatre, Fay's Bowery Theatre, etc.), it was generally referred to as the "Bowery Theatre". Israel Putnam (January 7, 1718 – May 29, 1790), popularly known as "Old Put", was an American military officer and landowner who fought with distinction at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). He also served as an officer with Rogers' Rangers during the French and Indian War (1754–1763), when he was captured by Mohawk people, Mohawk warriors. He was saved from the ritual burning given to enemies by the intervention of a French officer with whom the Mohawk were allied. Edward Loomis Davenport (1816September 1, 1877) was an American actor. Life and career Born in Boston, he made his first appearance on the stage in Providence, Rhode Island in support of Junius Brutus Booth. Afterwards he went to England, where he supported Mrs. Anna Cora Mowatt (Ritchie) (1819–1870), William Charles Macready and others. In 1854 he was again in the United States, appearing in Shakespearian plays and in dramatizations of Charles Dickens, Dickens's novels. As Bill Sikes he was especially successful, and his A New Way to Pay Old Debts, Sir Giles Overreach, a role he played at Daly's Fifth Avenue Theatre in 1869, and Brutus were also greatly admired.
