Punkin Center, Colorado
Punkin Center is a small, rural unincorporated community in Lincoln County, Colorado, United States, located at the junction of State Highway 94 and State Highway 71. Description John Stevens built the first store at the farmers crossroads in 1920. He painted each new building a pumpkin color, inspiring the name. Everything burned in the 1950s. Colorado State Highway 94
State Highway 94 (SH 94) is an east–west Colorado state highway that goes east beginning from US 24 just east of Colorado Springs and ending at U.S. Highway 40/ U.S. Highway 287 in rural Cheyenne County west of Wild Horse. The highway serves Schriever Air Force Base and the towns of Ellicott, Yoder, and Rush, where it then crosses through rural country. It also serves the Punkin Center area where it comes to a junction with SH 71. It then passes through more very rural country until it reaches a stop at US 40/ 287 west of the unincorporated town of Wild Horse. Hugo is a statutory town in and the county seat of Lincoln County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 730 at the U.S. Census 2010. History In about 1859 the town was developed as a cattle ranching community to supply miners with provisions. The town was also used as a local stage coach stop. There are two stories as to how the town obtained its name. One version says the town was named by the Kansas Pacific Railroad builders after pioneer stage agent (Overland company), Hugo Richards. Richards later moved to Prescott, Arizona where he became town banker and businessman. Another story says the town was named for Richard Hugo who was a local settler. A junction is where two or more roads meet. History Roads began as a means of linking locations of interest: towns, forts and geographic features such as river fords.
