Pune (पुणे, formerly spelt Poona) Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 48 Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituencies in Maharashtra state in western India. Vidhan Sabha segments The six vidhan sabha seats covered by Pune (पुणे) constituency have been frequently rearranged due to changing demography and population explosion in the area. Seats like Shukrawar Peth (1962-1977), Bhawani Peth no longer exist. Presently, Pune Lok Sabha constituency comprises six Vidhan Sabha (legislative assembly) segments. Narayan Ganesh Gore (Devanagari: नारायण गणेश गोरे) (1907–1 May 1993) was a socialist leader and Marathi writer from Maharashtra, India. Early life He was born in the town of Hindale in Konkan. He received his school and college education in Pune to earn a degree in law. Career Since his college days, Gore participated in India's struggle for independence under Mahatma Gandhi's leadership from the British Raj. In 1942, he suffered imprisonment by the British authorities for his participation in the struggle. 1957 Indian General Election
General elections were held in India between 24 February and 9 June 1957, the second elections to the Lok Sabha after independence. They were held five years after the 1951–52 elections in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India. Elections to many state legislatures were held simultaneously. There were 494 seats elected using first past the post voting system. Out of the 403 constituencies, 91 elected two members, while the remaining 312 elected a single member. The multi-seat constituencies were abolished before the next election. Under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indian National Congress easily won a second term in power, taking 371 of the 494 seats. They gained an extra seven seats (the size of the Lok Sabha had been increased by five) and their vote share increased from 45.0% to 47.8%. Indira Anant Maydeo
Indira Anant Maydeo was an Indian parliamentarian who represented Pune South in the 1st Lok Sabha as a member of the Indian National Congress. Early life Born on 7 September 1903, Maydeo attended the Fergusson College, from where she received her B.Sc. degree. Career Maydeo was actively involved in the Indian independence movement and was a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). In 1933, she joined the Maharashtra division of Harijan Sevak Sangh. She was the most prominent women member of the party in Pune (then in Bombay State) and when the first general elections of independent India were held, the INC made her its official candidate for Pune South constituency. Narhar Gadgil
Narhar Vishnu Gadgil (10 January 1896 – 12 January 1966) was an Indian freedom fighter and politician from Maharashtra, India. He was also a writer. He wrote in both Marathi and English. His son Vitthalrao Gadgil represented Congress later as minister and ideologue. His grandson Anant Gadgil also went on to become a politician. Gadgil graduated from Fergusson College in Pune in 1918, and obtained a degree in Law in 1920. Mukta Tilak
Mukta Tilak (17 August 1965 – 22 December 2022) was an Indian politician. She was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Kasba Peth (Vidhan Sabha constituency), Kasba Peth in the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, 2019 state elections as a member of Bharatiya Janata Party. Tilak was elected Mayor of Pune for the period 2017 to 2019. Tilak was the first member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, BJP to hold the Mayor's position. She died due to cancer in Pune on 22nd December 2022. Personal life and death Mukta Tilak was the daughter-in-law (niece-in-law) of Jayant Shridhar Tilak, Jayantrao Tilak, who was Bal Gangadhar Tilak's grandson. Her husband Shailesh Tilak is also associated with BJP. Tilak died of cancer on 22 December 2022, at the age of 57.
