Puerto De Pajares
The Puerto de Pajares is a mountain pass through the Cantabrian Mountains between the provinces of Asturias and Léon, Spain. The pass has been historically important to Asturias as the lowest elevation direct route between the capital, Oviedo, and the rest of inland Spain via Léon. The pass delineated, for a time, the frontier between the Christian Kingdom of Asturias and the Moorish extent of the Umayyad Caliphate. Today, the pass is crossed by the N-630 highway which links Oviedo and Léon, in addition to the Venta de Baños–Gijón railway which passes through a series of high elevation tunnels near the summit of the pass. The importance of the pass has diminished in recent years as the N-630 highway has been supplanted by the A-66 freeway which bypasses Puerto de Pajares through the Negrón Tunnel since 1997, to the west. Oviedo
Oviedo (; ast, Uviéu ) is the capital city of the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain and the administrative and commercial centre of the region. It is also the name of the municipality that contains the city. Oviedo is located approximately southwest of Gijón and south of Avilés, both of which lie on the shoreline of the Bay of Biscay. Pajares Base Tunnel
The Pajares Base Tunnel is a twin pair of railway tunnels beneath the Puerto de Pajares pass in the Cantabrian Mountains, Spain. Once completed, the length tunnel will form a key portion of the high-speed rail line between Valladolid and Gijón, and shall be used by both high speed passenger trains as well as by slower freight trains. Work commenced on the Pajares Base Tunnel following its authorisation in 2003. During the construction process, multiple setbacks were incurred on the part of the geological conditions present, particularly the copious ingress of water into the tunnels. Despite multiple years of remedial work and the deployment of unique engineering solutions, the infiltration issue has proved to be difficult to address, and questions have arisen as to if its electrification is even practical. Autovía A-66
The Autovía A-66 is a major highway in western Spain, part of the European route E803. The road is an upgrade of the N-630 which is being undertaken section by section. The route roughly corresponds to the ancient Roman ' Silver Route' connecting the cities of Mérida and Astorga. The final section of road south of Benavente is under construction as of October 2013 with completion anticipated in 2015. Route Autovía A-66 starts at Seville with a junction with the Autovía A-49. Umayyad Caliphate
The Umayyad Caliphate (661–750 CE; , ; ar, ٱلْخِلَافَة ٱلْأُمَوِيَّة, al-Khilāfah al-ʾUmawīyah) was the second of the four major caliphates established after the death of Muhammad. The Kingdom of Asturias ( la, Asturum Regnum; ast, Reinu d'Asturies) was a kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula founded by the Visigothic nobleman Pelagius. It was the first Christian political entity established after the Umayyad conquest of Visigothic Hispania in 718 or 722.
