Puerto Cabezas (; en, Bragman's Bluff; miq, Bilwi) is a municipality and city in Nicaragua. It is the capital of Miskito nation in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region. The municipality and the entire region are native American lands. The city of Puerto Cabezas borders the Community of Ten Communities. History Hurricane Felix hit Puerto Cabezas on September 4, 2007, killing about 100 people. Hurricane Eta hit the city on November 3, 2020, causing extensive damage. On November 16, 2020, Hurricane Iota hit the city as a strong Category 4. The North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region is one of two autonomous regions in Nicaragua. It was created by the Autonomy Statute of 7 September 1987. It covers an area of 33,106 km2 and has a population of 541,189 (2021 estimate). It is the largest autonomous region or department in Nicaragua. The capital is Puerto Cabezas. It contains part of the region known as the Mosquito Coast. Awas Tingni
Awas Tingni is an indigenous Mayagna community of some 2,400 members on the Miskito Coast of Nicaragua, in the municipality of Waspam in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region. Awas Tingni is located near the junction of the Rio Wawa and the river Awas Tingni in a densely forested area. In Mayagna, ''Awas Tingni'' means "Pine River" and denotes both the town and the river by which it is situated. Awas Tingni was named due to the large pine forest in the area, similar to the pine barrens of the mid-Atlantic United States. In 2001 the Mayagna won a landmark case against the government of Nicaragua in which the Inter-American Court of Human Rights held that they had a right as indigenous people to their collective land. Vilafranca del Penedès, or simply Vilafranca (), is the capital of the ''comarca'' of the Alt Penedès in Catalonia, Spain. Puerto Cabezas Airport
Puerto Cabezas Airport is an airport serving Puerto Cabezas, North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region. It is located approximately one hour from Managua by aircraft. Operated by the state of Nicaragua, it mainly serves the city of Puerto Cabezas and Bluefields located close to the northeast corner of the country. Improvement plans There are plans to make the airport an international airport. The Airport Management Authority of Nicaragua has drawn up plans for improving the paved areas, taxiways, ramps and an air terminal.
