Provincial Highway 6 () is a highway connecting Houlong, Miaoli and Dahu, Miaoli. The entire highway is within Miaoli County. The highway is now primarily used for local access after the completion of ( Provincial Highway 72), an expressway running parallel to the highway. Route description The route is a major highway in Miaoli County, as it connects the coastal townships in Miaoli with the mountainous ones. It is also known as Old Houwen Highway (舊後汶公路) since the terminus of the highway is Houlong and Wenshui (汶水), a village in Shitan. The highway begins at Xibin Expressway (西濱快速道路), also known as PH 61, in the coastal township of Houlong. Houlong, Miaoli
Houlong Township is an urban township in western Miaoli County, Taiwan. It is bordered by the Taiwan Strait on the west and Zaoqiao Township on the east. It lies at the mouth of the Houlong River. Miaoli HSR station is located in Houlong. Name The township's name originates from that of a Taiwanese Plains Aborigines settlement. During the Kingdom of Tungning, the area was called ''Aulangsia'' (). Other variants of ''Aulang'' existed (e.g., ). In 1920, during Japanese rule, the place was renamed , under , Shinchiku Prefecture. This name closely matched the Japanese pronunciation of the previous names but with different ''kanji'' (Chinese characters). Dahu Township () is a rural township in the south of Miaoli County, Taiwan. Geography As of January 2017, it had 15,071 inhabitants. Its area is . Miaoli County
Miaoli County (Mandarin Pinyin: ''miáo lì xiàn''; Hakka PFS: ''Mèu-li̍t-yen''; Hokkien POJ: ''Biâu-le̍k-koān'' or ''Miâu-le̍k-koān'') is a county in western Taiwan. Shitan, Miaoli
Shitan Township / Shihtan Township () is a rural township in Miaoli County, Taiwan. It is located in a mountainous area with a mild, sub-tropical climate. Its rainy season is from May to September. Shitan's population was estimated to be 4,141 in January 2023. History The area was occupied by native Taiwanese through the 19th Century with an economy strongly dependent upon hunting. In 1876 under Qing rule, the Chinese began to build bullock roads into the area. However it was not until the 1930s, during Japanese rule, that standardized roads began to be constructed. The first motor vehicle road was completed into Shitan in 1939, and regular bus service was started. However, by 1942 the bus service had ended because of fuel rationing. Provincial Highway 1 () is a -long Taiwanese provincial highway that starts in the north of the country near Taipei Main Station and ends in the south at Fangshan, Pingtung County.
