Protus Tissera
Warnakulasuriya Philip Antony Protus Tissera (11 September 1925 – 14 October 2007) was a Ceylonese politician. Tissera was born 11 September 1925, the son of Benedict Tissera and Corilethina née Dabarera. He was educated at the R. C. School, Katuneriya, Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa, St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa and St. Mary's College, Chilaw. He served as a member of the Kammalpattu Village Committee. Tissera contested the 6th parliamentary elections held on 22 March 1965 for the Nattandiya electorate, as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party candidate. He lost to the incumbent, Albert Peries by 5,409 votes. Following Peries' death in September 1967 a by-election for his seat was held on 5 January 1968, at which Tissera ran again, losing to the United National Party candidate, Hugh Fernando Warnakulasuriya Ichchampullige Hugh Fernando (17 November 1916 -2 April 1993) was a Sri Lankan politician born in Nainamadama. 1965 Ceylonese Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Ceylon in March 1965. Background The SLFP government of Sirimavo Bandaranaike lost its majority in December 1964 when some MPs deserted it over the nationalization of Lakehouse Newspapers. Bandaranaike's program of extensive nationalization had alarmed many of the island's business interests, which rallied to the United National Party. The economy had been stagnant, and rationing had been imposed in the face of persistent food shortages. The UNP promised to form a ''National Front'' government to oppose the SLFP and its Marxist allies. UNP leader Dudley Senanayake promised cabinet posts both to the small Sinhala nationalist parties and the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (Federal Party). Results The UNP did not obtain a majority, but was able to govern as a National Front with the ITAK's support. 1970 Ceylonese Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Ceylon in 1970. Background SLFP leader Sirimavo Bandaranaike had come to the conclusion that her party's best hope of power was forming a permanent alliance with Ceylon's Marxist parties. She assembled the SLFP, the Trotskyist LSSP, and the Communists into the United Front coalition. The UF's platform was called the ''Common Programme''; it featured extensive nationalization, a non-aligned foreign policy, expanded social programmes, and replacement of the British-imposed, monarchical Soulbury constitution with a republican constitution. The UNP government of Dudley Senanayake had not made much headway with Ceylon's twin problems of inflation and unemployment, nor had it attempted solving the linked problems of feudal property relations and adverse terms of trade by agrarian reform and industrialisation. Albert Peries
Sir Pattiyapathirennehelage Albert Fredrick Peries, KBE (12 May 1905 – 21 September 1967) was the 4th Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka. Serving as Deputy Speaker Peries first became Speaker with the sudden death of Francis Molamure, who collapsed and died while presiding over the session. Peries attended St. Joseph's College, Colombo where he was a keen sportsman. He entered the Ceylon Law College and qualified as a proctor and a notary public. He was elected to the seat of Nattandiya in the 1947 parliamentary election and was re-elected in the 1952, 1960 (March and July), 1965 and died in office in 1967. He only lost the 1956 parliamentary election to Hugh Fernando.
