Ulyanovsk Oblast
Ulyanovsk Oblast (russian: Ульяновская область, ''Ul’janovskaja oblast’'') is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). It is located in the Volga Federal District. Its administrative center is the city of Ulyanovsk. Population: 1,292,799 ( 2010 Census). Geography Ulyanovsk Oblast borders with Chuvashia (N), Tatarstan (NE), Samara Oblast (E), Saratov Oblast (S), Penza Oblast (W), and Mordovia (NW). It is located on the northern edge of Central Steppes. A quarter of its territory is covered with deciduous forests; the rest is covered with steppes and meadows. The oblast is divided in half by the Volga River. Hilly areas to the west of the Volga are known as Volga Upland (elevations up to 358 m (1,175 ft) ). Eastern part of the oblast is mostly flat. Sengiley Mountains
The Sengiley Hills (russian: Сенгиле́евские го́ры) are formed on the edge of the Volga Uplands, on the right bank of the middle Volga River in the Ulyanovsk Oblast, Uluyanovsk region of Russia. The area is part of the forest-steppe region, featuring representatives of forest: birch, pine tree, oak. The river banks of the Volga River along the eastern edge are on the Kuybyshev Reservoir. The Source Of Sviyaga River
The Source of Sviyaga River (russian: Исток реки Свияга) is a complex natural hydrological feature listed in the inventory of a protected area of the Ulyanovsk region in Russia. Description The source of Sviyaga River is the most important feature of the protected area, with significant conservation and environmental value. It lies about 5 km southwest of Kuzovatovo, where the land rises to 332 m above sea level. At this height the vegetation consists of tall-trunked pines, cowberry shrubs, and bilberry. Various representatives of the pear family are found here: one-sided pear, rotundifolious pear, verdant and small, pipsissewa umbellate, and sometimes a rare orchid plant, neottianta cucullata, can be found. The total area is 8 hectares. The main source of the Sviyaga River originates from a wood-bog, and is a small pure streamlet which flows into a deep broad gully with hygrophyte vegetation. Borok Island
Ostrov Borok (Russian: остров Борок) is a natural monument listed among the protected areas of Ulyanovsk Oblast in Russia. The territory is heavily forested, and its trees are home to a large colony of grey herons, with approximately 403 breeding pairs. The nitrogen-rich soil allows nettles and celandine in to grow large quantities.
