Proposed All-Ireland Football Team
An all-Ireland football team has been proposed on several occasions as a national representative association football team for the whole island of Ireland, an island which is politically divided into Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and which currently has two separate teams. History Ireland had its own national football team from 1882 onwards, administered by the Irish Football Association (IFA) which had been founded in 1880. It was the fourth oldest international football team in the world, and represented Ireland in international fixtures regularly, most frequently in the British Home Championship against England, Scotland and Wales. Irish Cup
The Irish Football Association Challenge Cup, commonly referred to as the Irish Cup (currently known as the Samuel Gelston's Whiskey Irish Cup for sponsorship purposes) is the primary football knock-out cup competition in Northern Ireland. Inaugurated in 1881, it is the fourth-oldest national cup competition in the world. Prior to the break-away from the Irish Football Association by clubs from what would become the Irish Free State in 1921, the Irish Cup was the national cup competition for the whole of Ireland. Since 30 November 2021, the cup has been sponsored by ''Samuel Gelston's Irish Whiskey''. It was previously sponsored by Nationwide Building Society, Bass Ireland Ltd, JJB Sports, Tennent's Lager and Sadler's Peaky Blinder. 126 clubs entered the 2018–19 competition. Dual Irish International Footballers
Dual Irish international footballers are a group of Irish international association footballers who, between 1908 and March 1950, played for the international teams selected by both the Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland. During this era at least 39 players represented both teams at a senior level. Harry Chatton
James Harry Chatton (23 April 1899 – 1983), was an Irish footballer who played for several clubs in the Scottish League, the American Soccer League and the League of Ireland. Chatton was a dual internationalist and played for both Ireland teams – the IFA XI and the FAI XI. Club career Chatton was born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland but moved to Dumbarton in Scotland with his family during his childhood. After playing with Dumbarton and Partick Thistle in the Scottish League, he joined Indiana Flooring of the American Soccer League in 1926. At the end of the 1926–27 season, he and teammate Alec Donald broke their contracts with Flooring and returned to Scotland to sign with Hearts. The ASL, through the United States Football Association, immediately contested Chatton's contract with Hearts resulting in FIFA voiding the contract. The Irish War of Independence () or Anglo-Irish War was a guerrilla war fought in Ireland from 1919 to 1921 between the Irish Republican Army (IRA, the army of the Irish Republic) and British forces: the British Army, along with the quasi-military Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and its paramilitary forces the Auxiliaries and Ulster Special Constabulary (USC).
