Propeller
A propeller (colloquially often called a screw if on a ship or an airscrew if on an aircraft) is a device with a rotating hub and radiating blades that are set at a pitch to form a helical spiral which, when rotated, exerts linear thrust upon a working fluid such as water or air. Propellers are used to pump fluid through a pipe or duct, or to create thrust to propel a boat through water or an aircraft through air. The blades are specially shaped so that their rotational motion through the fluid causes a pressure difference between the two surfaces of the blade by Bernoulli's principle which exerts force on the fluid. Most marine propellers are screw propellers with helical blades rotating on a propeller shaft (ship), propeller shaft with an approximately horizontal axis. Propeller Records was an independent record label formed in Auckland, New Zealand, by Simon Grigg in 1980. 1980-81 In the years prior to 1980 the New Zealand contemporary recording industry was largely moribund. The major record labels were either not recording or were confining themselves largely to middle of the road acts. The independent labels that existed either recorded Polynesian and Māori music or were offshoots of recording studios, releasing the odd record as a by product of down time in the studio. The thriving independent scene of the early seventies had largely wound down, and the large and vibrant live music scene was not being represented on vinyl. Propeller (band)
Propeller is an Estonian punk band formed in 1978. Propeller were one of the first punk rock bands formed in the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, which was still subordinate to the Soviet Union. The band achieved a deal of notoriety on 22 September 1980, when they were invited by workers from Eesti Rahvusringhääling to perform a concert at halftime at Kadriorg Stadium in Tallinn during a football match and after the game. After performing to a crowd of approximately 7,000 people during the halftime show, Soviet authorities then forbid the band from playing their post-show concert, instigating a riot that soon swept through Tallinn. As the band was blamed for being the catalyst that sparked the riots, authorities forced Propeller to disband shortly afterward and all recordings held by Eesti Raadio were destroyed. ''Propeller'' is the fifth album by American indie rock band Guided by Voices. Background Conceived initially by Robert Pollard as a farewell album in the face of years of obscurity and mounting debt, the album ended up "propelling" the band to a higher-profile status and influence, affording a lasting position in the indie rock canon. While significant portions were recorded in a professional recording studio (though later to be "lovingly fucked with" by Mike "Rep" Hummel, of Mike Rep and the Quotas), the album is notable for being the first of the band's albums to make extensive use of 4-track cassette and lo-fi recording techniques as an aesthetic unto itself. Songs are frequently punctuated by unexpected blasts of noise, awkward tape edits, sped-up or slowed-down vocal or instrumental parts, and other sonic bric-a-brac. ''Propeller'' is a 2002 studio album from the American singer-songwriter Peter Stuart. The album marked Stuart's solo debut. Stuart had previously formed the rock band Dog's Eye View in 1994. Before their hiatus, Stuart had been Dog's Eye View's lead vocalist and songwriter. The album's lead single was "With My Heart in Your Hands". Background Dog's Eye View founder and vocalist Peter Stuart had left the band to pursue solo projects following their 1997 release, '' Daisy''. Stuart, who had been a solo performer prior to forming Dog's Eye View, has stated that the idea of his making a solo album originally came from the group's record label, Columbia Records: Originally it was Columbia Records saying, "You're doing a solo record now.
