''Promises'' is a 2021 collaborative studio album by British electronic musician Floating Points, American jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, and the London Symphony Orchestra. It was released on 26 March 2021 through New York–based label Luaka Bop. The album consists of a single 46-minute composition noted for its "dreamlike" quality. The album has received widespread critical acclaim from music critics. ''Promises'' was the final album Sanders released in his lifetime, having died in 2022. Background and recording Sam Shepherd, a British DJ, musician and producer, has produced numerous projects in the field of electronic music under the moniker Floating Points. Sam Shepherd, known professionally as Floating Points, is a British electronic music producer, DJ, and musician. He is the founder of Pluto Records, co-founder of Eglo Records and leader of a 16-piece group called Floating Points Ensemble. Biography Raised in Manchester, England, Shepherd studied piano at Chetham's School of Music before receiving a PhD in neuroscience and epigenetics at University College London. He also worked as a DJ at Plastic People, a London club, in the late 2000s. Shepherd's musical influences include Claude Debussy, Olivier Messiaen, and Bill Evans. He began releasing work under the Floating Points moniker in 2008, and in 2017 toured with The xx. ''Black Unity'' is a composition and album by jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, recorded and released in late 1971. The whole album consists of a single thirty-seven-minute track, which was described by critic Joe S. Harrington as "an exercise in sustained harmonic groove that cannot be beaten" when he listed it at #38 on his Top 100 Albums. The compact disc reissue of 1997 unites the two parts as a single track, timed at 37:21. False Ending
A false ending is a device in film and music that can be used to trick the audience into thinking that the work has ended, before it continues. The tenor saxophone is a medium-sized member of the saxophone family, a group of instruments invented by Adolphe Sax in the 1840s. The tenor and the alto are the two most commonly used saxophones. The tenor is pitched in the key of B (while the alto is pitched in the key of E), and written as a transposing instrument in the treble clef, sounding an octave and a major second lower than the written pitch.
