A product sample is a sample of a consumer product that is given to the consumer free of cost so that they may try a product before committing to a purchase. Free samples A free sample or "freebie" is a portion of food or other product (for example beauty products) given to consumers in shopping malls, supermarkets, retail stores, or through other channels (such as via the Internet). Sometimes samples of non-perishable items are included in direct marketing mailings. The purpose of a free sample is to acquaint the consumer with a new product, and is similar to the concept of a test drive, in that a customer is able to try out a product before purchasing it. Although an expensive method of targeting customers, conversions to sales can be as high as 90% making it one of the main marketing strategies for certain markets. Shareware is a type of proprietary software that is initially shared by the owner for trial use at little or no cost. A test drive is the driving of a motor vehicle to assess its drivability or roadworthiness, and general operating state. A person who tests vehicles for a living, either for an automobile company, automotive media for review purposes, or a motorsports team, is called a test driver. The first test drives of a new production vehicle are made by mainstream automobile magazines and other third parties (not customers) for initial evaluation. Once vehicles are for sale, test drives are also usually allowed by vehicle traders (dealerships) or manufacturers to enable prospective customers to determine the suitability of the vehicle to their driving style. The International Convention to Facilitate the Importation of Commercial Samples and Advertising Material is a 1952 United Nations multilateral treaty. States that ratify the treaty agree to allow product samples and advertising material into the county duty-free. The Convention allows the duty-free importation of commercial samples that are determined to be of "negligible value". It also allows the duty-free importation of advertising material such as catalogues, price lists, and trade notices. The convention was concluded in Geneva on 7 November 1952. It was signed by six states and entered into force on 20 November 1955. The convention was soon complemented by the Customs Convention Regarding the E.C.S. Carnets for Commercial Samples which entered into force on 3 October 1957 and then virtually superseded by the Customs Convention on the A.T.A. Carnet for the Temporary Admission of Goods in 1961.
