Priyantha Jayawardena
Priyantha Jayawardena is a sitting Judge of the Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Education and early career After receiving primary and secondary education at Nalanda College Colombo. While at Nalanda he excelled in studies and Rugby football, rugger playing for the college rugger team. Later he entered Sri Lanka Law College and was enrolled as an attorney-at-law of the Supreme Court in 1988 and served as a research assistant to the late Mark Fernando and late P. Ramanathan (judge), P. Ramanathan. Legal career In 1994 after pursuing a master's degree in commercial law from the University of Aberdeen United Kingdom and returning to Sri Lanka he joined Attorney-General's Department as a state counsel. President's Counsel (Sri Lanka)
President's Counsel (postnominal PC) is an eminent lawyer who is appointed by the President of Sri Lanka to be one of the "President's Counsel learned in the law". The term is also recognized as an honorific which replaced the practice of appointment of Queen's Counsel (QC) which ceased when Sri Lanka became a republic in 1972. It is equivalent to the appointment of King's Counsel in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, such as New Zealand, and the equivalent of Senior Counsel in Commonwealth republics, such as South Africa, and derives the same privileges such as the privilege of sitting within the Bar of court. President's Counsel is a professional rank and status, conferred by the President under the Article 33 of the Constitution of Sri Lanka which is recognised by courts. Sri Lanka Law College
Sri Lanka Law College (abbreviated as SLLC), formerly known as Ceylon Law College, is a law college, and the only legal institution where one can enroll as a attorney-at-law in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1874, under the then Council of Legal Education, in order to impart a formal legal education to those who wished to become advocates and proctors in Ceylon. The main building of the college was constructed in 1911. It is located on Hulftsdorp Street in Colombo, Sri Lanka. As of late 2021, the current principal is Dr. Athula Pathinayake. Law education In order to practice law in Sri Lanka, a lawyer must be admitted and enrolled as an Attorney-At-Law of the Supreme Court. Mark Fernando
Justice Mark Damien Hugh Fernando, PC (27 February 1941 – 20 January 2009) was a jurist and former judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. He died after a long bout with cancer on 20 January 2009. He was known as a Judge who stood up for judicial independence and the integrity of the profession. Justice Mark Fernando helped groom a generation of capable and honourable lawyers. During the early 1990s, when he was a member of the Council of Legal Education, Justice Fernando initiated the Legal Internship Scheme to assist law students awaiting the results of the final examination to qualify as attorneys-at-law. Puisne (; from Old French ''puisné'', modern ''puîné'', "later born, younger" (and thence, "inferior") from late Latin ''post-'', "after", and ''natus'', "born") is a legal term of art obsolete in many jurisdictions and, when current, used mainly in British English meaning "inferior in rank". In the 18th and 19th-century legal world, the word was more often pronounced to distance it from its anglicized form ''puny'', an adjective meaning "weak or undersized".
