Private Life (1982 Film)
''Private Life'' (russian: Частная жизнь, translit. ''Chastnaya zhizn'') is a 1982 Soviet drama film directed by Yuli Raizman. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1982. Plot When two film companies merge, the former director of one of them must retire. Unexpectedly, he is now faced with a lack of understanding from his wife and children. Loneliness, self-pity and jealousy force him to critically examine his life for the first time. Yuli Raizman
Yuli Yakovlevich Raizman (russian: Юлий Яковлевич Райзман; December 15, 1903 – December 11, 1994) was a Soviet Russian film director and screenwriter. Career In 1924 he became a literary consultant for Mezhrabpom-Rus, the German-Russian film studio. He was assigned as assistant to Yakov Protazanov in 1925 and made his directorial debut in 1927 with ''The Circle'', first drawing attention the following year with '' Penal Servitude''. His next success was ''The Earth Thirsts'' in 1930, the Soviet Union's first sound film. He joined Mosfilm in 1931 and in 1937 he won his first Stalin Prize (of the Second degree) for ''The Last Night'', which was also his first collaboration with the writer Yevgeny Gabrilovich with whom he worked for the next 40 years. The film also achieved international recognition winning the Grand Prix at the Paris International Exhibition of 1937. The Soviet Union submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film between 1963 and 1991. The Foreign Language Film award is handed out annually by the U.S.-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Each year, the Academy invites countries to submit their best films for competition, with only one film being accepted from each country. The Soviet Union had a strong record in the category, receiving a total of nine nominations between 1968–1984, including three winners – ''War and Peace'', '' Dersu Uzala'' and '' Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears''. Eight of the nominees, including all three winners, were produced by Russian film studios. This is a list of submissions to the 55th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country.
