President Of The Victorian Legislative Council
The President of the Victorian Legislative Council, also known as the presiding officer of the council, is the presiding officer of the Victorian Legislative Council, the upper house of the Parliament of Victoria and equivalent to the President of the Australian Senate. When there is a vacancy in the office of president, a new president is elected by the members of the council from among its number. The president ceases to hold that office if they cease to be a member of the council, and can be removed at any time by a vote of the members. The current president is Shaun Leane. The role of the president The president is always a member of the Victorian Legislative Council, and is the ceremonial head of that council. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition. Bruce Atkinson
Bruce Norman Atkinson (born 15 May 1953) is a former Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the Victorian Legislative Council since October 1992, representing Koonung Province from 1992 to 2006 and Eastern Metropolitan Region from 2006 to 2022. Robert Frederick Smith (born 22 May 1948) is an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1999 to 2010, representing South Eastern Metropolitan Region. Smith was born in England, and attended St Brendan's Public school 1958–63 and Salisbury High School in Brisbane, Queensland, 1963–65. In 1965 he became a permanent member of the Royal Australian Navy, where he remained until 1980, when he became the plant operator of a steel mill. In 1989, he became a union leader. Monica Gould
Monica Mary Gould (born 5 May 1957) is a former Australian politician. She was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council between September 1993 and November 2006, representing Doutta Galla Province. Gould was born in Melbourne, and finished her secondary studies at a technical college in the suburb of Macleod. She became involved in the Manufacturing Grocers Association trade union, which later merged with the National Union of Workers. In 1980, she became its General Vice-President – a position which she held until her election to parliament. She was also a member of the Australian Council of Trade Unions executive between 1991 and 1993. Bruce Chamberlain
Bruce Anthony Chamberlain AM (9 August 1939 – 1 October 2005) was an Australian politician. He was born at Brighton in Melbourne to Peter Henry Chamberlain, a railways paymaster, and Eileen, ''née'' Haddad. After attending De La Salle College in Malvern, he studied at the University of Melbourne, receiving a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Law. On 6 February 1965 he married Paula Swan, with whom he had four children. In 1965 he became a partner with the solicitors' firm Melville, Orton & Lewis, while also acquiring farming property near Hamilton. He served on Hamilton City Council from 1969 to 1973. Alan Hunt (politician)
Alan John Hunt AM (9 October 1927 – 19 July 2013) was an Australian politician, having been a member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1961 until 1992. Hunt started his education in South Australia and later attended Melbourne Grammar School. He then went to the University of Melbourne where he was a non-resident law student at Trinity College. He was president of the Melbourne University Liberals from 1948–50 and secretary of the then National Union of Australian University Students. After obtaining a law degree he practised as a solicitor until entering the Legislative Council in 1961, representing the Liberal Party. Fred Grimwade
Frederick Sheppard "Fred" Grimwade (12 September 1933 – 23 February 1989) was an Australian politician. Grimwade was born in Melbourne, the son of Erick Grimwade (whose grandfather was a state politician) and Gwendolen Ada Carnegie. He attended Melbourne Grammar School and Melbourne University, where he was a resident student at Trinity College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, and then undertook further study at Iowa State College in the United States. He subsequently farmed at Glenaroua Homestead in Broadford. William Fry (Victorian Politician)
Sir William Gordon Fry (12 June 1909 – 29 September 2000) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat to engineer Alfred Gordon Fry and Edith Elizabeth Andrews. He attended state schools at Ballarat before studying at Melbourne University and becoming a schoolteacher. On 19 September 1936 he married Lilian Gwendoline Macrae, with whom he had four sons. From 1940 to 1945 he served in the Australian Imperial Force, commanding the 47th Battalion in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. He attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel and was mentioned in dispatches, and subsequently headed a commission investigating war crimes in the Pacific. Raymond Garrett
Sir Raymond William Garrett, (19 October 1900 – 12 October 1994) was an Australian pilot, military officer, photographer, and politician. A member of the Liberal Party, Garrett served on the Victorian Legislative Council for eighteen years, and was knighted in 1973. Early life and career Garrett was born in Kew, in Melbourne, Victoria. He was educated at Workingman's College (now RMIT University) and the University of Melbourne. Sir Ronald William Mack (20 May 1904 – 12 February 1968) was an Australian politician. He was born at Warrnambool to wool buyer Frederick David Mack and Elizabeth Edith Hatton. He attended Warrnambool High School and qualified as an accountant in 1927. From 1930 he ran his own accountancy firm. On 20 February 1935, he married Helen Isobel Janet Lindsay; they had one son.
