Preservation (song)
"Preservation" is a non-album single written by Ray Davies and performed by The Kinks in 1974. Although it was related to the two ''Preservation'' albums lyrically, it did not appear on either album until it was added to the CD reissue of ''Preservation Act 1''. Lyrics and music The lyrics of "Preservation" basically sum up the plot of the two ''Preservation'' albums. It describes how "once upon a time in a faraway land, lived a villain called Flash, he was such a wicked man," who "terrorized the people ... broke arms and crushed hands ... ruled with a fist and ... purchased all the land." However, under Flash, the "people were scared" and "they didn't know where to turn." They soon realized that Flash only did what he did for money and "for his own preservation." The Kinks
The Kinks were an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, north London, in 1963 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s. The band emerged during the height of British rhythm and blues and Merseybeat, and were briefly part of the British Invasion of the United States until their touring ban in 1965. Ray Davies
Sir Raymond Douglas Davies ( ; born 21 June 1944) is an English musician. He was the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and main songwriter for the rock band the Kinks, which he led with his younger brother Dave on lead guitar and backing vocals. He has also acted in, directed, and produced shows for theatre and television. Known for focusing his lyrics on English culture, nostalgia, and social satire, he is often referred to as the "Godfather of Britpop", though he disputes this title. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Kinks in 1990. After the dissolution of the Kinks in 1996, he embarked on a solo career. Mirror Of Love
"Mirror of Love" is a track from The Kinks' theatrical album, Preservation Act 2. It was written by Ray Davies. It was released as the debut single from Preservation Act 2 in the U.K. only, but a version that was rerecorded for the American release was released as a single in both America and Britain. Lyrics and music "Mirror of Love" makes use of a New Orleans jazz, with Ray Davies on the majority of the instruments on the album/U.K. single version (guitar, piano and drums) with the only other people playing on the song being Dave Davies on mandolin as well as horns. Like many tracks of the era, Davies is singing as one of the characters in the Preservation Act 2, Preservation storyline. "Everybody's a Star (Starmaker)" is the opening track on The Kinks' poorly received 1975 concept album, ''Soap Opera''. It was written by The Kinks' primary songwriter, Ray Davies. Lyrics and music Like the two albums of the ''Preservation'' rock opera before it and ''Schoolboys in Disgrace'' after it, ''Soap Opera'' follows a storyline throughout the album. In "Everybody's a Star (Starmaker)", Ray Davies portrays the main character of the album, Starmaker. Starmaker describes himself as "a creator, inventor and innovator" who watches "the ordinary people, no matter what heiroccupation is." ''Preservation Act 1'' is a concept album and the 12th studio album by the English rock group the Kinks, released 16 November 1973 by RCA Records. ''Preservation Act 1'' did not sell well (peaking on the '' Billboard'' 200 at No. 177). However, it was well received by many critics at the time. A review in ''Rolling Stone'' by Ken Barnes was critical of Ray Davies' "tendency toward vaudevillian excess," but overall he rated ''Preservation'' as a "highly listenable, enjoyable album." Barnes singled out "Sitting in the Midday Sun" as a "wistfully irresistible" number and labeled "One of the Survivors" the Kinks' "best outright rocker" in years. Gary Lucas, reviewing ''Preservation Act 1'' for ''Zoo World'', also had high praise for the work, stating: "Dare I say it is one of the ''nicest'' albums to be released this year (if not the best)? ''Preservation Act 2'' is a 1974 concept album by the English rock band the Kinks, and their thirteenth studio album. It sold poorly (peaking on the ''Billboard'' Top LPs & Tape chart at No. 114), and received a mixed response among critics. Ken Emerson, in ''Rolling Stone'', held out the album as an "underrated" one in the Kinks' repertoire. Other critics were less charitable: ''The A.V. Club'' described it as "sprawling... with its radio announcements and melodramatic, sub-Andrew Lloyd Webber musical numbers, is a wash, the sound of a once-great band losing the plot." AllMusic referred to it as "a mess, an impenetrable jumble of story, theater, instrumentals, 'announcements,' unfinished ideas, guest singers, and, on occasion, a song or two."
