''Prayers Be Answered'' is the second album release and the first studio album by the New Zealand band The Dance Exponents, released in December 1983. The album peaked at #4 and spent 45 weeks on the New Zealand Album charts. The album won the Best Album award at the 1984 New Zealand Music Awards. In May 2013, Universal Music re-released the album digitally in New Zealand in remastered standard and deluxe editions. The deluxe edition has twelve additional tracks of singles, B-sides, rarities and demos. The Exponents
The Exponents, formerly The Dance Exponents, was a New Zealand rock group led by vocalist and songwriter Jordan Luck. Their major hits were "Victoria" " Why Does Love Do This To Me" and "Who Loves Who The Most". History 1980s: Dance Exponents The group formed in 1981 after vocalist Jordan Luck and guitarist Brian Jones disbanded their first group, Basement, and relocated from the South Canterbury town of Timaru to Christchurch with their ex-Splash Alley friend, Steve "Fingers" Cowan. Searching for a drummer in Christchurch, the trio met David Gent (bass) and Michael "Harry" Harallambi (drums) from punk band Channel 4. Cowan moved from bass to keyboards and guitar and the five piece became the Dance Exponents. Their first gig was at the Hillsborough Tavern on Luck's 20th birthday and Cowan's 22nd – 15 October 1981. ''Live At Mainstreet'' is the 1983 album by the New Zealand band The Dance Exponents, recorded live at a May performance at the Mainstreet Cabaret for the ''Radio with Pictures'' TV show. The B side of the album has songs by The Legionnaires. The album charted at #3 and spent nine weeks on the New Zealand Album Chart. Victoria (Dance Exponents Song)
"Victoria" is a song by New Zealand rock band The Exponents from their 1982 album '' Prayers Be Answered'' and their debut single. Released in June 1982 as the band's debut single, it reached Number 6 on the New Zealand singles chart. The song was selected by a panel of New Zealand songwriters to have been the #8 top 100 New Zealand songs of all time. Background "Victoria" was inspired by Luck's landlady in Christchurch, with the name ''Victoria'' used as a pseudonym whilst her real name was Vicky. She successfully ran an escort agency but lived with an abusive man: Luck questioned her relationship with the line "What do you see in him?". The band moved to Auckland before the release of the song. After the single became a success, Luck visited 'Victoria' in Christchurch and was happy to find that she not only loved the song but had also split from her abusive boyfriend. Jordan Luck
Jordan William Hunter Luck (born 15 October 1961) is the former lead singer and songwriter of the New Zealand rock band The Exponents. He was born in Vanderhoof in the province of British Columbia, Canada. His family moved to Tokarahi (near Oamaru) and later moved to Geraldine where he grew up. He attended University of Canterbury and College House. He is now in a band called The Jordan Luck Band. At the 2007 APRA Silver Scroll Awards on 18 September, Luck was named as the first inductee to the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. He was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to music in the 2012 Queen's Birthday and Diamond Jubilee Honours. Peter Van Der Fluit
Peter van der Fluit (born 1963) is a musician, composer, writer, producer, and business person from Auckland, New Zealand. He was a founding member of the post-punk new wave band the Screaming Meemees. As of 2022 he serves as the main Creative Director at Liquid Studios. Screaming Meemees Van der Fluit formed the Screaming Meemees while still in high school at Rosmini College, with classmates Tony Drumm, Michael O'Neill, and Laurence "Yoh" Landwer-Johan. After the inclusion of their single ''All Dressed Up'' on compilation album ''Class of 81'' produced by Simon Grigg’s Propeller Records, Grigg signed the band to his label. Mandrill Studios was a recording studio in Parnell, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. Many of New Zealand's prominent artists have had their work recorded there. Background The studio was located in the Auckland suburb of Parnell on York Street. It was owned by former 60s pop singers Glyn Tucker, Dave Hurley, along with composer and producer, Gary Daverne. Around 1980, Hurley and Daverne pulled out of the business, leaving Tucker as the sole owner.
