''Praepolyplectus'' is an extinct genus of cephalopod belonging to the family Hildoceratidae. It is sometimes considered to be a synonym of '' Polyplectus''. While it is currently not known from which species it has evolved, there are multiple theories about its origin. Formerly has been suggested, that it has evolved from Harpoceratinae Harpoceratinae is an extinct subfamily of cephalopods belonging to the family Hildoceratidae. Harpoceratinae is an extinct subfamily of cephalopods belonging to the family Hildoceratidae. Ammonites of this subfamily had involute and compressed shells with strong keels. Keel might be rarely missing, but this is considered to be an abnormality. This has been observed both in '' Cleviceras'' and ''Harpoceras'' and called as genus '' Monestieria'', which is now known to be invalid (into this invalid genus were added also abnormal unkeeled specimens of genus '' Protogrammoceras''). Another example is '' Pseudolioceras'', whose unkeeled specimen was used as type for description of invalid genus '' Praehaploceras''. Oxyconic forms of this subfamily ('' Polyplectus'' and '' Sphenarpites'') does not have any keel. Ribs were single, but in some genera also bifurcating with shapes from sigmoidal to falcate. Ammonitida is an order of ammonoid cephalopods that lived from the Jurassic through Paleocene time periods, commonly with intricate ammonitic sutures. Ammonitida is divided into four suborders, the Phylloceratina, Lytoceratina, Ancyloceratina, and Ammonitina. The Phylloceratina is the ancestral stock, derived from the Ceratitida near the end of the Triassic. The Phylloceratina gave rise to the Lytoceratina near the beginning of the Jurassic which in turn gave rise to the highly specialized Ancyloceratina near the end of the Jurassic. Ammonitina comprises a diverse suborder of ammonite cephalopods that lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era. They are excellent index fossils, and it is often possible to link the rock layer in which they are found to specific geological time periods. The shells of Ammonitina are typically planospiral; coiled in a plane, symmetrical side to side. Shells vary in form, including those that are evolute, such that all whorls are exposed, and those that are strongly involute with only the outer whorl showing. Hildoceratidae is a family of ammonoid cephalopods from the Lower Jurassic, lower Pliensbachian (''Jamesoni'' zone) to lower Bajocian (maybe even upper Bajocian) substages, generally with strongly ribbed, involute shells. They are combined with the Hammatoceratidae (= Phymatoceratidae), Graphoceratidae, and Sonniniidae to make up the Hildoceratoidea. Leonard Frank Spath FRS (20 October 1882 – 2 March 1957) was a British geologist specialising in malacology and ammonitology. Education Spath gained a Bachelor of Science degree in geology at Birkbeck College in 1912 and obtained employment at the British Museum as an assistant curator in the geology department.
