The Powell River Kings are a junior "A" ice hockey team based in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada. They are members of the Coastal Conference of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). They play their home games at Hap Parker Arena. History Powell River joined the British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCJHL) for the start of the 1988–89 season with the name the "Paper Kings", when they assumed the Delta Flyers franchise. They dropped the "Paper" from their name for the start of the 1998–99 season. Powell River, British Columbia
Powell River is a city on the northern Sunshine Coast of southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Most of its population lives near the eastern shores of Malaspina Strait, which is part of the larger Georgia Strait between Vancouver Island and the Mainland. With two intervening long, steep-sided fjords inhibiting the construction of a contiguous road connection with Vancouver to the south, geographical surroundings explain Powell River's remoteness as a community, despite relative proximity to Vancouver and other populous areas of the BC Coast. Brad Bombardir
Luke Bradley Bombardir (born May 5, 1972) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played for the New Jersey Devils, Minnesota Wild and the Nashville Predators in the NHL. He currently serves as the Minnesota Wild's Director of Player Development and Senior Director of Community Relations. Playing career Amateur Growing up in British Columbia, Bombardir played minor hockey with the Powell River Paper Kings in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League from 1988 until 1990. As a result of his play, in which he recorded 10 goals and 25 assists in 60 games, Bombardir was selected in the third round, 56th overall, in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils. Calvin Elfring (born April 23, 1976) is a Canadians, Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He was originally selected by the Quebec Nordiques in the seventh round (165th overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Brett Andrew Hull (born August 9, 1964) is a Canadian–American former ice hockey player and general manager, and currently an executive vice president of the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings and Phoenix Coyotes between 1986 and 2005. His career total of 741 goals is fifth highest in NHL history, and he is one of five players to score 50 goals in 50 games. Michael Garteig
Michael Garteig (born November 5, 1991) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who is currently playing for ERC Ingolstadt in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). Garteig has previously played for Utica Comets and Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. Playing career Garteig played for the Powell River Kings and the Penticton Vees in the British Columbia Hockey League for four seasons. He won the BCHL Top Goaltender Awards in 2011 and 2012, and was a member of the 2012 Royal Bank Cup-winning Penticton Vees team. Garteig then played collegiate hockey for the Quinnipiac Bobcats. He burst onto the scene after his freshman year. Dean Malkoc (born January 26, 1970) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who spent four seasons in the National Hockey League between 1995 and 1999 with the Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins, and New York Islanders. The rest of his career was spent in the minor leagues, in particular the American Hockey League. Playing career A tough, physical defender, Malkoc was selected 95th overall in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils. Jeffrey Allan Hoggan (born February 1, 1978) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). Playing career Although born in Hope, Hoggan spent much of his minor hockey career in the Chilliwack Minor Hockey Association before joining the Powell River Kings of the BCHL. Undrafted, Hoggan attended the University of Nebraska-Omaha and played through three years of eligibility with the Mavericks in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. He signed a contract in 2005 with the St. Louis Blues. In July 2006, he signed with the Boston Bruins as a free agent.
