Posterholt
Posterholt is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Roerdalen. History The village was first mentioned in 1147 as Posterholt. The etymology is unclear. Posterholt is a linear forest cultivation village from the 12th century. It became an independent parish in 1793. The Catholic St Mathias was built between 1950 and 1951 to replace the earlier church which was destroyed in 1945. The tower was added between 1961 and 1962. The Aerwinckel estate was built in 1856 and designed by Pierre Cuypers to replace the medieval castle. Posterholt was home to 605 people in 1840. It merged with the municipalities Montfort and Sint Odiliënberg in 1991, and the new municipality changed its name to Ambt Montfort three years later. Ambt Montfort
Ambt Montfort () is a former municipality in the Dutch province of Limburg. In 1991, the municipalities of Montfort, Posterholt, Reutje and Sint Odiliënberg merged. The original name of the merged municipality was "Posterholt", but it was changed in "Ambt Montfort" in 1994. On January 1, 2007, Ambt Montfort merged into the municipality of Roerdalen. Montfort (Netherlands)
Montfort () is a small city in the Dutch province of Limburg. Montfort has about 3,000 inhabitants. It lies about 8 km south of Roermond. It received city rights in 1271 and is renowned for the ruins of Castle Montfort, built in the 13th century. Until 1991, Montfort was a separate municipality. Sint Odiliënberg
Sint Odiliënberg () is a village in southeast Netherlands, It is located in Roerdalen, Limburg, in the Roer River valley. History Romans settled here very early. Around 700, missionary monks from Ireland, Saints Wiro, Plechelmus, and Otgerus, built a monastery there, which was important in the Christianisation of the Netherlands. In the time of the Viking invasions the Utrecht clergy found shelter here. At first it was a secular collegiate chapter, which later moved to Roermond in the 14th century. A community of the Canons Regular of the Holy Sepulchre settled on the hill during that period. The village was first mentioned in the first half of the 9th century as Mons Petri. Pierre Cuypers
Petrus Josephus Hubertus "Pierre" Cuypers (16 May 1827 – 3 March 1921) was a Dutch architect. His name is most frequently associated with the Amsterdam Central Station (1881–1889) and the Rijksmuseum (1876–1885), both in Amsterdam. More representative for his oeuvre, however, are numerous churches, of which he designed more than 100. Moreover, he restored many monuments. Biography Cuypers was born in Roermond, the son of a church painter, and grew up in surroundings in which interest for art was encouraged. After he studied at the urban college in Roermond, he moved to Antwerp in 1844 to study architecture at the Royal art academy. He was taught by Frans-Andries Durlet, Frans Stoop and Ferdinand Berckmans, all pioneers of the neo-Gothic architecture in Belgium.
