Portuguese World Exhibition
The Portuguese World Exhibition ( pt, Exposição do Mundo Português) was held in Lisbon in 1940 to mark 800 years since the foundation of the country and 300 years since the restoration of independence from Spain. The fair ran from 23 June to 2 December 1940, held on the Praça do Império, and was attended by 3 million people. Organizers Augusto de Castro was the commissioner general, Júlio Dantas president of committee, the master architect, António Ferro (director), and lead engineer Duarte Pacheco. The exhibition was opened by President Carmona, with Oliveira Salazar also in attendance. Contents The fair was divided into three main sections of display: history, ethnography, and the colonial world. Oscar Pereira Da Silva
Oscar Pereira da Silva (August 29, 1867 – January 17, 1939) was a Brazilian painter, draftsman, designer, and instructor. He was active from the end of the 19th to the mid-20th century. He is noted for his depictions of historical events in Brazil, but also completed numerous portraits, religious works, genre scenes, still lifes, and landscapes. He "paid no attention to Brazilian folk tradition" and painted in an "antique style." After a period of study in France, he pursued a lucrative career in São Paulo, where his works are displayed at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and the Museu do Ipiranga. Early career Pereira da Silva was born in São Fidélis. He showed an early interest in drawing and painting. He enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in 1882 and studied with Eliseu Visconti, Eduardo Sá, and João Batista da Costa. Exhibition Of The Centenary Of The Opening Of The Ports Of Brazil
The national commemorative Exhibition of the centenary of the opening of the Ports of Brazil, also known as Brazilian National Exposition of 1908 or the National Exposition of Brazil at Rio de Janeiro, marked a hundred years since the opening of the Brazilian ports acelebrated Brazil's trade and development. It opened in Urca, Rio de Janeiro on 11 August, stayed open for 3 months and received over 1 million visitors. Location The 41 person executive committee considered several locations in Rio de Janeiro, before selecting a 182,000 m² site between Praia da Saudade and Praia Vermelha in Urca. Opening The fair was opened (a month later than planned) by president Afonso Pena. The main entrance was through a hundred foot high illuminated gateway designed by René Barba. Portuguese Colonial Exhibition
The Portuguese colonial exhibition was a world's fair held in Porto, Portugal in 1934 to display achievements of Portugal's colonies in Africa and Asia and allow the visitors to travel throughout the empire in a metaphorical sense. Portugal's director of 'Colonial Show Fairs' Henrique Galvão who had represented Portugal at the Paris Colonial Exposition in 1931 was made the technical director for this exhibition. It was decided to re-use the Palácio de Cristal which had been constructed for an 1865 International Exhibition, earlier exhibition in Porto. It ran from 16 June to 30 September and by the time it had closed there had been 1.5 million visitors. Candido Portinari
Candido Portinari (December 29, 1903 – February 6, 1962) was a Brazilian painter. He is considered one of the most important Brazilian painters as well as a prominent and influential practitioner of the neo-realism style in painting. Portinari painted more than five thousand canvases, from small sketches to monumental works such as the Guerra e Paz panels, which were donated to the United Nations Headquarters in 1956.
