Portugal At The 2009 World Championships In Athletics
Portugal was represented at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics, held in Berlin from August 15 to August 23, with a delegation of 30 athletes (17 men and 13 women). This delegation matched the record for the biggest national team at the World Championships in Athletics, set at Athens 1997. The team included reigning Olympic and 2007 world triple jump champion Nelson Évora, reigning world indoor champion in the long jump Naide Gomes, and Olympic and World Championships medalist Rui Silva. Veteran race walker and 2005 bronze medalist Susana Feitor accomplished her 10th consecutive appearance at the World Championships. Francis Obikwelu came out of retirement to compete with the 4 × 100 metres relay team. Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo (FPAtletismo), is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Portugal. History The Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo was founded on 5 November 1921, under the name "Federação Portuguesa de Sports Atléticos". It is headquartered in Linda-a-Velha, Oeiras. It's an independent sports governing body, of public interest, non-profit, ruled by their own code. The Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo (FPAtletismo) organizes the Portuguese Indoor and Outdoor Athletics Championships. It has 21 regional associations, promoting and directing the practice of athletics, in men's and women's. 2009 World Championships In Athletics – Men's 1500 Metres
The men's 1500 metres at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Olympic Stadium between 15–19 August. Among the favoured athletes in the event were defending champion Bernard Lagat, European champion Mehdi Baala, and the Kenyan season leaders Asbel Kiprop, Haron Keitany and Augustine Choge. All the favoured athletes progressed through a series of tactically-run heats on the first day of competition, with Baala, Kiprop, Choge and Deresse Mekonnen the four race winners. Moroccan Amine Laalou won the first semi-final, followed by Americans Lopez Lomong and Lagat, while Kiprop and Leonel Manzano both finished quickly to take the top two qualifying spots in the second race. José Filipe da Silva Moreira (born 20 March 1982) is a Portuguese former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He spent most of his career with Benfica, appearing in 148 competitive matches and making his Primeira Liga debut at 19. He also competed in Wales and Cyprus.
