''Portraits in Moonlight'' is a collection of stories by American author Carl Jacobi. It was released during 1964 by Arkham House with an edition of 1,987 copies and was the author's second collection published by Arkham House. Half of the stories had been published originally in the magazine ''Weird Tales ''Weird Tales'' is an American fantasy and horror fiction pulp magazine founded by J. C. Henneberger and J. M. Lansinger in late 1922. The first issue, dated March 1923, appeared on newsstands February 18. The first editor, Edwin Baird, prin ...''. Some of the stories are science fiction. Carl Richard Jacobi
Carl Richard Jacobi (10 July 1908 – 25 August 1997) was an American journalist and writer. He wrote short stories in the horror and fantasy genres for the pulp magazine market, appearing in such pulps of the bizarre and uncanny as ''Thrilling'', ''Ghost Stories'','' Startling Stories'', ''Thrilling Wonder Stories'' and ''Strange Stories''. He also wrote stories crime and adventure which appeared in such pulps as '' Thrilling Adventures'', ''Complete Stories'', '' Top-Notch'', ''Short Stories'','' The Skipper'', ''Doc Savage'' and ''Dime Adventures Magazine''. Jacobi also produced some science fiction, mainly space opera, published in such magazines as ''Planet Stories''. He was one of the last surviving pulp-fictioneers to have contributed to the legendary American horror magazine ''Weird Tales'' during its "glory days" (the 1920s and 1930s). Horror is a genre of fiction which is intended to frighten, scare, or disgust. Horror is often divided into the sub-genres of psychological horror and supernatural horror, which is in the realm of speculative fiction. Literary historian J. A. Cuddon, in 1984, defined the horror story as "a piece of fiction in prose of variable length... which shocks, or even frightens the reader, or perhaps induces a feeling of repulsion or loathing". Arkham House
Arkham House is an American publishing house specializing in weird fiction. It was founded in Sauk City, Wisconsin, in 1939 by August Derleth and Donald Wandrei to publish hardcover collections of H. P. Lovecraft's best works, which had previously been published only in pulp magazines. The company's name is derived from Lovecraft's fictional New England city, Arkham, Massachusetts. Arkham House editions are noted for the quality of their printing and binding. The colophon for Arkham House was designed by Frank Utpatel. Founding In late 1937, after Lovecraft's death, Derleth and Wandrei sought to produce a collection of their friend's best weird fiction from the pulp magazines into a memorial volume. Weird Tales
''Weird Tales'' is an American fantasy and horror fiction pulp magazine founded by J. C. Henneberger and J. M. Lansinger in late 1922. The first issue, dated March 1923, appeared on newsstands February 18. The first editor, Edwin Baird, printed early work by H. P. Lovecraft, Seabury Quinn, and Clark Ashton Smith, all of whom went on to be popular writers, but within a year, the magazine was in financial trouble. Henneberger sold his interest in the publisher, Rural Publishing Corporation, to Lansinger, and refinanced ''Weird Tales'', with Farnsworth Wright as the new editor. The first issue under Wright's control was dated November 1924. The magazine was more successful under Wright, and despite occasional financial setbacks, it prospered over the next 15 years.
